A student of the Faculty of Arts of the M S University (MSU) was threatened at knifepoint by persons over the ensuing student elections on the campus. The accused wanted the student to canvass for a student leader contesting for the polls knowing well that he supported a candidate from the opposite group. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon at the MSU boys’ hostel campus near the K M Munshi Hall. Shoaib Khan was on his way back home from the arts faculty when two persons – Rehan and Ramzan – allegedly intercepted him.

The duo allegedly asked Shoaib why he was not canvassing for a candidate contesting on the faculty representative (FR) post at the arts faculty. When Shoaib said that he will support a candidate of his choice, the duo beat him up and one of them allegedly pulled out a knife. Seeing the commotion, a crowd gathered at the spot and the accused had to flee from the spot.

Shoaib’s brother Yasin, who is an MA student in the same faculty said that the accused left behind their motorcycle. He said that the motorcycle was handed over to the police. Yasin said that the accused were not students of the university and were outsiders who were issuing threats at the behest of the candidate. An offence regarding the incident was registered at the Sayajigunj police station.

Yasin said that the officials of the university as well as the faculty had been apprised of the incident. He added that even the hostel authorities were informed as the incident took place inside the hostel campus.

MSU office on special duty (registrar) Amit Dholakia said that security had been tightened following the incident. “We have asked our security as well as the police to be more vigilant,” he said.
