The stage is all set for the senate elections on 25 seats at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) that are scheduled to be held on Sunday. Participation of high profile candidates and involvement of political parities have led to the elections becoming a prominent event in south Gujarat.

For the 25 seats in the offing, voting will take place at 44 polling stations across south Gujarat. Of total 44 polling booths, 25 are in the city. Surat has been divided into five zones having an equal number of polling booths each. “The five booths in each zone are at the same location to accommodate maximum voters. We are making arrangements for smooth polling and expect co-operation from different groups,” VNSGU registrar J R Mehta said.

Polling will start at 11 am and continue till 5 pm. After voting, the ballot boxes will be brought back to VNSGU on Monday and counting will take place on Tuesday.

Ballot box and ballot paper distribution work was completed on Saturday. Polling staff from different voting centres were called at VNSGU and were imparted training for the conduct of polls. Relievers have also been deployed to facilitate voting by the polling staff themselves.

Addressing the polling staff, Mehta said, “No officer on election duty should succumb to any kind of pressure or fear. They can call me or other officers on election duty in case of any problem.” Officers on poll duty have been asked to keep their mobile phones on.

VNSGU vice-chancellor Dakshesh Thakar said, “The polling duty should be performed by all the officers in a democratic and unbiased manner. With the arrangements in place the process would be carried out smoothly.”
