    50,000 appear for SSC & 30,000 for HSC board examinations

    Invigilation was tight with flying squad members, double that of last year, reporting directly to the district collector.

    The first day of the board examinations for HSC and SSC students went off smoothly with no copying cases or untoward incidents reported from any of the examination centers in the Ahmedabad. In the Gujarat, eight lakh students appeared for class 10 examinations, while a lakh of students sat for the class 12 Science stream examination and over 3.5 lakh students for the HSC General stream examination.

    In Ahmedabad city alone, 50,798 students appeared for the SSC examinations, while 614 were absent on the first day.

    In HSC General stream, 20,673 sat for the examinations, while 204 were absent, and in Science stream, 10,655 appeared, while 101 were absent.

    HSC science students sat for the Physics paper, while commerce students appeared for Accountancy paper. SSC students had their first language paper.

    Like last year, most schools welcomed the students, gave them flowers, applied tilak on their foreheads and offered them sweets.

    However, the enthusiasm seemed to be missing this year. The reason: Principal and staff of respective schools were sent to other schools for invigilation. The flying squads were also doubled this year with 135 squads keeping a vigilant eye at the examination centers.

    As against teachers and principals who comprised the flying squad till last year, this year under the watchful eye of the district collector, municipal corporation employees, collectorate and other state government department staff have been brought into the squad.
