The HSC (science) third semester exams will begin on October 25, Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board officials said on Monday. The semester system was introduced in the 11th standard last year, with two semester exams held last year.Officials said many parents made representations to GSHSEB asking the board to consider the marks of third and fourth semester exams alone. They argued that four semester board exams put considerable pressure on their wards. Parents represented that the policy should be changed so as not to put pressure on the students in four semester exams.

“Earlier, students had to bear the pressure of a board exam only for a year, which has now been extended to two years. Consistent stress on student’s mind is not good for their mental and physical health,” parents bodies had represented.

“However, GSHSEB clarified that there is no scope or possibility of change in the semester system. Marks of all four semester exams will be given equal weight. Students and parents should be prepared for this and must not anticipate any change in semester exams system,” said chairman of GSHSEB, R R Varsani.

Officials said the third semester exam would be objective-type questioning and be assessed through an Optical Mark Reader (OMR) system.

“The first and the third semester exams are objective while second and fourth exams are subjective and will have detailed answers,” said board officials.

Officials said that contrary to what parents feel, it is relatively easier for students to prepare and score in the semester system as they have to study a limited part of the syllabus in a set time period.
