The Gujarat high court set a deadline for the Gujarat University syndicate elections on Thursday and held that the decision taken by the vice-chancellor was not proper.A division bench has asked the university authority to hold the elections by September 30. The direction was passed in response to petitions filed by a couple of senate members including former deputy chief minister, Narhari Amin.

The GU acting VC said that the elections should be held following the court order. On the other hand, certain sections of BJP felt that the order needs to be challenged; while another section of the party felt that the elections should be held irrespective of the fear of result. tnnThis section felt that holding back elections had gone against them and favoured Congress which was pressing for elections in the run up to the state assembly polls to be held later this year.

A lot of controversy marred the issue of syndicate elections where Congress alleged that GU was dragging its feet on announcing the schedule on insistence of BJP leaders who did not want an election.
