The Gujarat high court on Wednesday upheld the decision of Gujarat governor Dr Kamla to remove the registrar ofSaurashtra University Gajendra Jani. The court has asked the university authorities to implement the order of the governor.

Gajendra Jani was appointed as registrar on May 3, 2007. But he soon courted controversy after doubts were raised about his academic qualifications and experience. There were alleged irregularities in his appointment.

Members of the Youth Congress had complained to chancellor Dr Kamla about it after which she constituted a three-member committee comprising former Gujarat high court judge L A Pathan, former additional secretary J D Mahida and UGC under-secretary Narayan Singh to probe the matter. The committee had reported against Jani’s appointment saying that he did not fulfill the basic criteria for appointment to the post.

This led to the governor ordering his removal last year. However the university did not implement the order following which senate member Dharam Kamaliya and Youth Congress president Mukesh Chawda had approached the high court challenging the syndicate’s decision to stick with Jani.
