Veer Narmad South Gujarat University to start study centre in Surat Central Jail in Surat

Nazir Saeed (name changed), a convict lodged in Surat Central Jail (SCJ) would be sitting in a classroom soon to complete his graduation studies which he had to leave after being arrested for murder. Saeed will be becoming a student of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), which is all set to start a centre in the state’s most advanced jail.

Till now, prisoners had the option of enrolling in distance learning programmes, but it is for the first time that a university is starting a study centre in a jail where classes will be conducted. VNSGU has started the admission procedures and regular courses are likely to start in the jail from the next academic year. More »

‘Gujarati main reason for high dropout rate in Dang schools’ in Surat

Textile process may further revise job charges.

The textile processors in the country’s biggest man-made fabric hub in Surat may further increase the job charges for processing dyeing and printing fabrics after the recent hike of Rs 1 per meter.

Reason : Pandesara green environment and water welfare cooperative society limited, which operates the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) has increased the monthly charges from Rs 7,500 per chamber to Rs 11000 per chamber for the treatment of the effluent generated by the dyeing and printing mills in Pandesara. 167 students from Gujarat make it to IIT-GEE!

Till a few years ago, making it to IIT was a distant dream for students from Gujarat. However, this has changed, increasing awareness of competitive exams have enabled many students to crack IIT-JEE.

This year a record number of 167 students made it to the merit list of IIT-JEE, while another 175 students are in the extended merit list. Of the 7,268 students who appeared for the examination over 4 per cent have made it to the merit list as well as the extended merit list. This figure was better than past performances. Last year about 100 students cleared their examination.
