“Our investment at Limda plant, that was set up in 1991, has crossed Rs 2,000 crore investment with this new facility,” chairman of Apollo Tyres Limited Onkar S Kanwar told mediapersons. The Limda plant is Apollo’s flagship and largest unit, where the company recently enhanced its passenger radial production capacity from 90,000 tyres a month to 4.50 lakh tyres.

The company has spent Rs 200 crore at Limda for starting the OTR facility where ultra large tyres weighing more than a 1,000 kg and over eight feet in height, are produced. “This facility has come up as part of the tripartite agreement that we had signed with Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Coal India,” added managing director Neeraj RS Kanwar.

BEML along with Coal India, are the largest users of OTR tyres in the country. “We are producing these ultra large OTR tyres through a public-private partnership with BEML, which is Asia’s largest manufacturer of earth moving vehicles.”

Talking about their upcoming greenfield facility at Chennai, the company officials added that the facility will go on stream in December. The Chennai facility will help Apollo produce 6,000 truck radials and 8,000 passenger radials per day. At Limda, the company has production capacity of 20,000 passenger radials per day whereas the pilot project for truck radials has capacity of only 400 tyres per day.

About the company’s plans, he said after launching the LPG model of its popular model Accent Accent Eco, HMIL will roll out diesel model of i-20 by end of this year and it is also planning to roll out another mini car in the coming year.

“We also plan to introduce a car that is smaller than Santro,” said Lheem, adding that the new car will be bigger than Nano and priced at Rs 2.5 lakh.

Lheem, however, refused to divulge details about the exact year in which the new car will be launched. “It will come within a couple of years,” he said.

While inaugurating the 17th dealership in Gujarat taking the total number of dealers in western region to 57, HMIL hoped that its dealer’s network will be further strengthened to around 300 by end of 2009 from the present strength of 255 operational dealers
