Patni computer to recruit 350 by 2011 end in Gandhinagar

IT and BPO service provider Patni Computer Systems plans to recruit 350 employees by the end of 2011, the company said today.

The new recruits would be based in the second delivery centre in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat which was inaugurated recently, Patni Computer Systems said in a statement here.

“We are looking at strengthening our presence in this burgeoning IT delivery hub and expect Gandhi Nagar to play a crucial part in this delivery expansion strategy…,” Patni Chief Executive Officer Jeya Kumar said.

The company currently has a headcount of 400 at the existing center and had planned to add 350 employees at the new center taking the total employees to 750 in the next one year, it added.

Patni currently has over 16,000 employees at global delivery centers across 16 cities. It has 30 offices across the Americas, Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific region the statement added.

Commonwealth Express to showcase relevance of IT in Gandhinagar

The Commonwealth Express (CW Express), a special exhibition train designed to promote the mega event that will take place in Delhi, will be on the Gandhinagar railway station in Gujarat on September 14 and 15, 2010.

The train contains 14 coaches, of which six coaches are devoted to telling the success story of information technology (IT) in India. Five other coaches provide a curtain raiser for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The contribution of Indian Railways to the sports and a list of railway sportspersons who have won Arjuna awards, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards, Dronacharya award, Padmashree and Dhyanchand awards have been displayed in a separate coach in the train. Besidse, photographs of outstanding sports personalities of the country have been depicted in all around the coaches. The remaining coaches have the displays on milestones from information technology. These coaches will narrate the story of IT and communication, and how it affects the lives of the common man, especially in rural areas. An interesting aspect in the sixth coach is the story of communication over the years — from smoke signals to SMS and e-mails.

Ravi Saxena, additional chief secretary, Government of Gujarat who also heads the state’s IT department along with Department of Science & Technology (DST), said, “The Commonwealth Express is about bridging the knowledge gap. This exhibition on wheel focuses on exhibition of information and communication technology in different fields, on ICT services and its influence on normal human life. The exhibition showcases the success of information technology in different fields, its importance in different events, e-governance plan, efforts behind maintenance and its multimedia usages.”

Flagged off from New Delhi on June 24, the CW Express will be on the track of different cities in the country and will back to its destination point on October 2. The CWG Express is a joint project between the Information Technology and Railway Ministries.

Boom for Gujarat IT exports, Data says it!

Information technology in Gujarat was always seen as a marginalised industry, thanks to the absence of large companies. But when major

IT hubs of the country were reeling under a slowdown in the West in 2009, Gujarat’s disadvantage turned into an edge. IT exports from the state have grown by an impressive 72% year-on-year in 2008-09.

Data available with Software Technology Park of India (STPI), a nodal agency set up by the Central government to promote software exports, indicates that while exports from Gujarat have consistently grown over the past three years by over 20 per cent, during recession-hit 2008-09, it skyrocketed from Rs 740 crore in 2007-2008 to Rs 1,270 crore in 2008-9, a jump of over 70 per cent.

“The meltdown helped Gujarat-based small players as many US companies chose to outsource work to reduce costs. These companies preferred smaller companies over biggies due to competitive rates offered by them. Most IT firms in Gujarat are SMEs,” said Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, science & technology. Exports have already crossed Rs 1,000 crore in the first three quarters of the current fiscal, says Ajay Sharma, director, STPI (Gujarat).

Large companies like TCS expanded their footprint in the state, which further augmented outsourcing business, said Nirav Shah, president of Gujarat Electronics & Software Industry Association.

And, it were not just firms in the space of Business Process Outsourcing, Knowledge Process Outsourcing and call centres that gained. “Gujarat companies are building good reputation in the field of Engineering Design Software (EDS),” said Chirag Mehta, managing director of a software company. A chunk of EDS business came from Australia, USA and UK companies.
Software export from Gujarat was mere Rs. 4.75 crore in 1996 and until 2000 exports remained below Rs 10 crore. “Software exports crossed Rs 450 crore in 2004-05 due to improved infrastructure,” said Sharma.

Microsoft & Gujarat Govt. Sign MoU to Enhance Use of IT in Education

Microsoft India Pvt. Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to enhance the adoption and use of IT in the state education sector.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft will invest in enabling educators in the state to connect with each other, increase access to technology and training for learners in classrooms and campuses and thereby enhance career opportunities.

Karan Bajwa, Director – Public Sector, Microsoft India, said, “Today Gujarat is symbolic of the best in India. As it moves into its next stage of the development process and focuses on enhancing it’s the socio-economic index, we believe IT will play a key enabling role. A continued focus on education is imperative to help people achieve their potential. We are proud and excited to partner with the state of Gujarat in its efforts.”

A focal part of the agreement will involve building IT readiness in both pre-and in-service school teachers under Microsoft’s Partner’s in Learning. Partners in Learning is Microsoft’s global program that provides the education community with resources and training. In India alone, more than 270,000 teachers have already been trained and empowered by it.

Microsoft will also set up an IT Academy at Ahmadabad equipped with state-of-the-art IT systems and will focus on curriculum innovation and upgrading master trainers under this program.

The MoU also entails the adoption of IT curriculum developed by Microsoft for students of classes VI through X; as well as a Joint Certification for higher education students after completion of the MS Digital Literacy curriculum. This is expected to have the additional benefit of enhancing the employability skills of the youth.

The agreement also includes DreamSpark, a Microsoft program that offers free Microsoft software development tools to all higher education students. The state colleges will also be eligible to implement the Live@Edu program that makes sharing, collaborating and just staying connected easier for both the faculty and students.

The engagement will also include implementation of Education Management and Information system and Campus Management, a solution that addresses all stake holders in education and helps in easy administration, collates information from schools, clusters, block and district on all parameters that are required to monitor and evaluate educational ecosystem across the state.

Sabeer Bhatia has plans to develop Gujarat as silicon valley.

Hotmail Co-founder Sabeer Bhatia on Monday said he looks toward cultural innovation in Gujarat and has plans to develop the state as the next Silicon Valley.

“We have got Letter of Intent (LoI) from Carneige Mellon University for setting up a Nano city that will have software development facility for niche sectors such as nano technology, bio-sciences and material sciences,” Bhatia said, during the inauguration of Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit which began here today.

“With world class infrastructure here and support of the Gujarat government, we can make the state as next Silicon Valley of India by setting up a Nano city here,” Bhatia said.

Sharing his experiences on emergence of silicon valley decades ago, Bhatia said the innovation at that time had led to phenomenal creation of value, and the model could be replicated here.

“Five decades ago Hewlett Packard created a small hub outside Standford that led to the birth of Silicon Valley, and in the last 10 years I have seen 1 trillion dollar of value being created because of cultural innovation,” he added.

“India has huge potential for it, with a population of 1.2 billion people we create around half-a-million engineers annually, but somehow they are not able to make to make it to top echelons in key innovative hubs, therefore we need a nano city,” Bhatia said.

The innovation can come through education and the Nano city will play a key role in software development for niche segments.

Gujarat will become IT hub soon

Gujarat will witness an ICT (information and communication technology) boom thanks to its IT special economic zones (SEZs), said an industry official here Friday.

Addressing a conclave, Nirav Shah, president of the Gujarat Electronics and Software Industries Association (GESIA), said the IT SEZs would greatly help Gujarat’s economy besides generating IT growth, investments, and skilled employment.

“Having initiated interactions with various stakeholders to build ‘Brand Gujarat’, the GESIA is spearheading efforts to make IT in Gujarat truly ‘vibrant’,” Shah said at an IT, ITES SEZ Conclave.

During Vibrant Gujarat 2006, MoUs worth Rs.500 billion were signed, of which Rs.30 billion investment has already taken place, he said.

“In Gujarat, 25 SEZs are notified though 60 have been recommended. Only after a notification does an SEZ come into being,” said Ravi Saxena, development commissioner of Kandla Special Economic Zone, Gujarat.

“Gandhinagar needs to be developed like a Californian town. Gandhinagar is better than Bangalore and investors could be easily attracted. In Bangalore, you would take two hours to travel 5 or 15 km while in Gandhinagar movement is easy and it is a beautiful city,” Saxena said.

In his speech, Development Commissioner for IT SEZs in Gujarat Ajay Sharma said an IT-ITES SEZ may be set up in the public, private or joint sector or by the state government, the minimum size of a SEZ not being less than 10 hectares and a required construction of 100,000 sq metres with additional infrastructure facilities like uninterrupted power supply.

$32.5 million investment in Azure Knowledge, an ITES player in the city

Ahmedabad: Greater Pacific Capital (GPC), a London-based strategic investment firm has announced its $32.5 million investment in Azure Knowledge, an ITES player in the country and the largest BPO and KPO in the state of Gujarat.

The investment, which will be made over the next 12-18 months, is claimed to be the biggest investment in a 3rd party KPO in western India till date. This is following Azure’s successful acquisition of 49 percent stake in U.S. based Citizens Financial Mortgage in April 2008.

Rahejas IT SEZ in Vadodara!

The Centre has given formal approval to four new special economic zones (SEZs) for Gujarat, taking the total SEZs for the state to 55.

The SEZs that received nod at the Board of Approvers’ meet in Delhi on Friday included a textile SEZ by Pradeep Overseas Ltd on 109 hectares (ha) near Ahmedabad, a solar equipment SEZ by Euro Multivision Ltd on 11 ha near Bhachau, and two IT SEZs â€“ by Gauri Shankar Property on 16 ha near Ahmedabad and by Raheja group on 14 ha near Vadodara.

Officials said, Pradeep Overseas â€“ which is in the business of home textiles, home dÃ©cor and home furnishings, including table linen, bed spreads, quilts, cushion covers and curtains â€“ will be investing Rs 500 crore for the project, which is likely to take place on a land the developers have identified between Ahmedabad and Sanand.

Euro Multivision, which is in the business of renewable energy, will be producing solar cells and other equipment, with an investment of Rs 100 crore off Bhachau.

Though Gujarat has received approvals for 55 SEZs, one of the highest in India, just three are functioning â€“ two in Surat and one in Kandla. Ten have been issued letters of permission (LoPs) to start operation, including Reliance’s SEZ at Jamnagar, Adanis’ at Mundra, Essar’s at Hazira, Zydus’ pharma SEZ near Ahmedabad, the apparel park SEZ in Ahmedabad, and two SEZs by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation â€“ one at Dahej and another at Gandhiangar, for electronics equipment.

With this, just nine SEZs remain to be issued LoPs out of the 19 that have been notified for start setting up infrastructure by the Central government.

Rest of the SEZs are at various stages of approval, including 23 which have been given formal approval and seven which have been received an in-principle nod by the Centre.

SEZs were top on the priority list of the 2007 Vibrant Gujarat summit. The summit saw a huge Rs 1.71 lakh crore worth of investment for SEZs out of a total of Rs 4.65 lakh crore.

Gujarat allots 26 acre for Satyam’s SEZ

Govt allots 26 acre land for Satyam’s SEZ

Satyam Computers Services Ltd, one of the software giants in the country, has been allotted over 26 acres of government land for setting up special economic zone (SEZ) dedicated to information technology (IT) sector.

The captive special zone would come up in the state’s capital Gandhinagar near Infocity. “On July 16, the company’s officials formally received possession of the land from the district collector,” said a senior Gujarat government official on the condition of anonymity.

Satyam is the country’s second IT consultancy firm to plan a SEZ in the state after Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The TCS has already been approved over 10 acres of land in Gandhinagar.

Confirming the latest development, Capt H R Prasad, global head, corporate services, Satyam Computer Services Ltd, said Satyam was in the process of planning the campus in Gandhinagar. The company would now soon initiate the process of obtaining the formal nod from the board of approval and notification from the Centre.”

According to government sources, the process of notification should not take very long, given the fact that the special economic region is to come up on a government land.

The company, listed on BSE as well as New York Stock Exchange, was expected to set up a software development centre in its captive SEZ, said a government official.

The Secunderabad-based company’s officials, however, expressed inability to provide investment and employment figures for the project, saying that it was still in the early stages of planning.

This would be the 11th IT sector-specific SEZ in the state when approved. So far two IT-dedicated special zoneshave been notified: one is Ahmedabad and the other in Gandhinagar.

Interestingly, all the IT SEZs in the state, except one by Nipiam Infotech in Vadodara, are housed in the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. While Ahmedabad has 4 of them in different stages of approval, Gandhinagar accounts for the rest.

Apart from Satyam, TCS’s IT SEZ in Gandhinagar, which has been formally approved by the Centre, is awaiting notification. In addition, some of the national-level realtors, like DLF and Raheja, have also got IT special zones approved in Gandhinagar.

Satyam Computers’s first quarter profit went up 45% on the back of rupee weakness. The company posted net profit of Rs 548 crore against Rs 378 crore a year ago. Its revenue rose to Rs 2,621 crore from Rs 1,830 crore last year.
