MICA Go Common Admission Test (CAT) scores for admission

Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad (MICA) will, once again, accept Common Admission Test (CAT) scores for admission to its flagship course this year. The institute had abandoned the CAT test from its admission process in 2010 and 2011 to use its own written test – ‘MICA test’ (MICAT).

The admission for 2012-14 batch of post-graduate programme diploma in management (communications) PGDM(C) will adopt a three step process of CAT, MICAT, and group exercise (GE) and personal interview (PI).

A recent directive given by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has forced MICA to consider CAT scores. “AICTE issued a notification last December making it compulsory for all management institutes registered under the council to consider the score of any one of five national tests – CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA or JMET- in the admission processes,” said associate director at MICA, Arbind Sinha.

“We chose to use CAT as we were already familiar with it.”

Apart from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the seven management institutes from the state which will use CAT scores this year are MICA, Amrut Mody School of Management of Ahmedabad University in Ahmedabad, Faculty of Technology Management of CEPT University in Ahmedabad, Institute of Management of Nirma University in Ahmedabad, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) in Gandhinagar, School of Petroleum Management of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University in Gandhinagar and Auro University in Surat.

In the years to come, MICA is likely to drop CAT scores from its admission process once again. “We are in the process of registering MICAT as one of the national tests recognized by AICTE,” said executive registrar of MICA, K G K Pillai.

IIM-Ahmedabad draws students from across world

Ahmedabad: For the famed Indian Institute of Management of Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the golden jubilee year has been special.

The institute is gearing up to accommodate the highest intake of foreign students under its student exchange programmes this year. According to sources at the IIM-A, the trend is thanks to the fact that India is regarded as among the important, emerging economies of the world.

According to IIM-A authorities, for the trimester from September to December 65 students have come under exchange programmes from premier European and North American business schools. “Next year, we are expecting more students for various courses,” said AK Laha, faculty co-ordinator at IIM-A.

It has been a constant rise for IIM-A. According to officials, there were 57 students in 2008-09, a number which increased to 69 in 2009-10. For each of the two years, 96 IIM-A students went to foreign institutes for studies. Most of the students from abroad join PGPM, the institute’s flagship programme, but there is growing demand for PGPX and double specialisation courses as well.

India has become a hot destination for management graduates across the world. Apart from having one of the biggest growing economies and its world-wide effects, it is India’s resource pool of professionals with knowledge of English language that puts foreign nationals at ease.

Atanu Ghosh, dean, alumni & external relationships, told TOI that there was a substantial rise in interest shown by foreign business schools to partner with IIM-A. “The experience of studying in a top institution of India, networking with potential top managers of the country and the continuing growth of India as a economic power are the factors attracting more students from Europe and North America to come and study here,” he said.

Tanu Singh, a student and spokesperson for the exchange students at IIM-A, said it is a win-win situation for both the parties. “Our students get to interact with students from other countries and understand their cultures. It is an excellent platform to interact with students across the globe, share ideas with them and work in multi-cultural teams,” she said.

Sell your idea, make it big on a iWeekend in Ahmedabad

If you have an idea and don’t know how to turn it into a business, Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM-A has the solution.

‘iWeekend’ where for the first time, a highly motivated group of 50 entrepreneurs and professionals will select a few ideas and work together to launch a version of the products. All of this in a weekend. Of the final presentations, some products will be selected and funded by venture capitalists and other funding agencies.

“iWeekend is a non-profit organization started in Spain in 2008 with the mission of promoting culture of entrepreneurship in new technologies. Since then, it has conducted several programmes,” said Aditi Gupta from CIIE.

This year, they will conduct three programmes in India — from March 12 to 14 in Bangalore, March 19 to 21 in New Delhi and finally in Ahmedabad from March 26 to 28.

The iWeekend will be organised with the help of Nadathur Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (IIM Bangalore), CIIE (IIM Ahmedabad) and Indus Entrepreneurs, Delhi chapter.

“Registrations have begun for the event meant for professionals, freelancers, programmers, designers, marketers, businessmen, lawyers and even students. Technology innovation will be the main theme where ideas based on software and internet-based applications will have to be developed,” added Gupta.

IIM-A to host Finance conclave 2010

The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will be hosting its two-day Finance Conclave 2010 from Friday. The theme of the conclave is India: Challenging the New Normal’. The conclave is being organised by the special interest groups of the students, Beta The Finance Club and Leverage The Private Equity and Venture Capital Club with the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE)

The first day of the conclave will focus on A New World Order’ and will address questions pertaining to a new regime of regulations, consolidation activity and inclusive growth that will shape the new economic order post the financial crisis.

The speakers invited for the conclave include chief general manager of RBI, B Mahapatra; Private Equity Pro Advisors, Arvind Mathur; Sunil Kolangara from UTI Ventures; Nikhil Khatau from Mayfield Ventures and Anand Tandon from Brics Security amongst others.

AMA Seminar focuses on global trends in pharma

The Science and Technology Committee of the International Union of Architects (UIA) is in town for their annual working group meeting.

It conducted a day-long seminar at AMA (Ahmedabad Management Association) on Wednesday as part of their meeting. Several technical presentations were made by the committee members hailing from India, the US, Germany, Hungary and Israel.

The focus of the seminar was global trends in pharmaceutical, biotech and healthcare design, including sustainable design, alternative energies and other concepts that are changing the way these facilities are conceived, designed and operated.

A delegation of international engineers and designers along with reputed experts and industry leaders participated in the seminar.

The UIA was founded in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1948 to unite architects of the world.

The UIA, headquartered in Paris, represents over two million architects worldwide and has 10 working groups including the Science and Technology Committee. These groups meet annually. The theme for this year’s meeting was research. Presentations were made on research and manufacturing facilities for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The group cited Gujarat as one of the major hubs of their activity, and hence chose Ahmedabad as their destination for the meeting.

Besides discussing case studies on local projects such as Claris and JSW, the group will conduct technical tours of IIM-A, CEPT and Claris Pharmaceutical campus.

Gujarat Goverment approved three new private universities (Ahmedabad University, ICFAI University, Navrachana University)

The Government of Gujarat has approved three new private universities in the state. Ahmedabad University proposed by the Ahmedabad Education Society campus to come up near Helmet Circle, ICFAI University proposed by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analyst of India and Navrachana University proposed by Vadodara based Navrachana Education Society.

Gujarat’s Education Minister Shri Ramanbhai Vora said that the proposed universities would enjoy complete university status after legal formalities in the next assembly session.

He said that five self financed colleges run by Ahmedabad Education Trust that are currently associated with Gujarat University would become a part of the new Ahmedabad University(AU) from June-2009. These are H L Institute of Commerce, M G Science College, L M College of Pharmacy and LD Arts College. Apart from Gujarat Law Society-run H A College of Commerce and its law college, Gujarat University will be left with second-rung colleges in the city and institutes in rural areas.

AU’s academic operations will start in June 2009. All self-financed Bcom, BBA, BCA, MBA, MCA institutes will be affiliated to AU. Students who wish to enroll in the first year will now have to apply to AU for enrollment. AU is planning to revise the syllabus and introduce a grading system. First task however would be of announcing a vice chancellor.

The governing body of Ahmedabad University includes Arvind Mills managing director Sanjay Lalbhai, chairman and managing director of Torrent Sudhir Mehta and member of IIM-A’s governing council Praful Anubhai.

Another proposed University ICFAI will offer B Ed, MCA, B Tech, Finance, MBA, Diploma in Port Management etc. courses at it’s Rs1800 crore campus in Ahmedabad. The minister said that Vadodara based Navrachna University will offer four years Teachers Training course with capacity of 200 students.

Gujarat has already seven private universities; CEPT, Nirma, DDIT, DAIIT, Ganpat University, Kadi Sarva Vidhyalaya and Pandit Dindayal Petroleum University.

Symbiosis plans campus near Ahmedabad!

After Indian Institute of Management (IIM-A) and the National Institute of Design (NID), Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Nirma Univercity & Petroleum University now Symbiosis International University (SIU) has now decided to set up a fully-residential academic campus near Ahmedabad, with an initial focus on infotech (IT) and engineering courses.

SIU principal director Vidya Yeravdekar, who was in Ahmedabad recently to attend the Vibrant Gujarat 2009′ industrial summit, said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on January 13 between SIU and the Gujarat government regarding the proposed campus.
“We have asked for a 30 to 40 acre land at a concessional rate along the belt between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,” Yeravdekar said and added that the Gujarat government was working on the location for the proposed campus. “Our objective is to see that phase I of this upcoming campus becomes functional by the beginning of academic year 2011-12,” she said.
Among the premier deemed universities in the country, the SIU started over 25 years ago from the city and has extended its footprint to five campuses across Pune besides Noida, Bangalore and Hyderabad. With more than 25,000 students under its belt, the SIU is better known for its flagship unit the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management.
Yeravdekar said, “The Noida campus will become operational from 2009-10, while the Hyderabad and Ahmedabad campuses are expected to start simultaneously in 2011.”
She said, “The planned initial focus on engineering and technology courses is a conscious decision, considering that Ahmedabad is already home to other major entities in the field of management and design education, like the Indian Institute of Management and the National Institute of Design.”
“The sizeable presence of industries in and around Ahmedabad provides us with a captive ground for placing the engineering and technology pass-outs besides utilising services of industry experts for visiting faculty assignments,” she said. “The industry-academia connect will be more pronounced,” she added.
In the longer run, Yeravdekar said, the SIU does have plans to take its other academic programmes like management, design and health sciences. “The proposed campus will be full-residential facility,” she said, adding, the projected investment was to the tune of Rs 100 crore.
