3.5L apply for 9000 Police jobs as 2nd round of police hiring begins

After the mega recruitment of 680 police sub-inspectors and more than 8,000 constables in 2010, the second batch of more than 9,000 police personnel will be trained by the Gujarat State Police Recruitment Board by next year. The drive to recruit these personnel started on Wednesday with physical tests being conducted at 12 centers across the state.

This is second large scale recruitment drive after the last one in 2010, which itself was held after a gap over 7 years. While last time, 5 lakh applications were received for nearly 10,000 posts, this year around 3.5 lakh candidates have applied for 9,000 posts. The number of woman candidates has also gone up as more than 40,000 applications have been received by the police officials for various posts.

The drive is targeted at filling up already vacant posts in the state police and also prepare personnel to replace retiring officials of all ranks. State police officials said that from 2010 onwards, the acute shortage of staff in khaki force has been taken seriously and with constitution of recruitment board, the induction will hopefully be a regular affair.

Talking about the current recruitment drive, chairman of the recruitment board for police sub-inspectors Ashish Bhatiya said that the last drive has taught them a lot. “This time, the process is quite stream-lined. Earlier, we had different physical tests for various ranks. Now, all the candidates will have to go through the same test. We have 800 meters running on the first day. Those who successfully complete the test in stipulated time will go for 5 kilometers running on the second day,” he said.

9,560 seats still vacant in engg, pharma colleges in Gujarat

Despite efforts made by the Gujarat Education department to fill up vacant seats by relaxing norms for admission into the professional courses, there are still 9,560 seats lying vacant.
As per data revealed recently, of the total 51,104 seats in Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor and Diploma of Pharmacy, only 41,541 seats have been filled up till October 30.
The state education department issued notification to the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) to admit students who have not appeared for or cleared the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJ-CET), including students from outside Gujarat.
The move was aimed at filling 7,700 seats in the engineering and pharmacy colleges in Gujarat.
However, even though its been quite some time since the notification was issued, the situation doesn’t seem to have improved as the figure of vacant seats suggest that 44,363 seats in 103 BE college, 3,9231 seats are filled up and 5,129 seats are still lying vacant.
Similarly, in 91 B Pharm colleges there is an intake of 6,121 seats, however, only 2,091 seats have been filled up and 4,031 are still lying vacant.
In 10 colleges of diploma in pharmacy, out of an intake of 620 seats, only 219 seats are filled up, thus leaving 401 seats vacant, sources said.

No NEET in Gujarat this year

The state government on Wednesday declared it will not hold National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical colleges in state this year. The government spokesperson said that the union government law will not be implemented in Gujarat. NEET will now be held in 2012.

State Health minister Jaynarayan Vyas said, “The test will come into force from 2012. Students wishing to pursue in paramedical or dentistry in Gujarat, will have to appear for GujCET. If the NEET is introduced in the state, students will have to appear for a series of tests.”

If NEET is implemented here, it will allow class XII students to sit in a single entrance examination to get admission to almost all medical colleges in India.

4,600 to take entrance test for SPIPA

With more and more students seeking a spot in the civil services in Gujarat, this year a record 4,600 students will take an entrance test on Sunday for Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA), a coaching institute for civil services examination.

SPIPA has been coaching aspirants for civil services exams since 1972. “This year the number of aspirants for the 72 seats was the highest compared to past years. Gujarati youths have become more aware about the career options in the civil services and so there has been an increase in the number of students taking the entrance exam every year,” said J M Acharya, joint director SPIPA.

Besides the fact that the civil services were gaining popularity, the number of students clearing the exam was also increasing. This year six students from the state made it to the civil services. Students demand that SPIPA should increase its capacity to 250 students.

Kankaria to be developed on lines of Essel World

Good news for Amdavadis who are still in touch with their childish side. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is now planning to set up a world class amusement park at the Kankaria lake, at par with Essel World in Mumbai.

The area where the amusement park will be set up is only 3,000 sq meter. “The area is too small to compare it with Essel World, but we want to have some rides which are equal to or better than the Mumbai park,” AMC officials said.

The AMC has invited expression of interest to set up an amusement park. Presently, around 3,000 sq meter of the lakefront adjoining the Balvatika area is available for creation of this amusement park.”

Mahendra Patel, deputy municipal commissioner said, “We want to set up this park inside the Kankaria lake campus only. But if the party is interested in setting up rides outside the lake also, AMC would be open to the idea.”

He said that the term for the present park has ended and when this was to be revised, it was decided to have world class rides. This would draw more visitors to the lake which is fast becoming a major attraction in the city. AMC officials said that the Kankaria lake was redeveloped comprehensively in 2008 with an investment of Rs 36 crore. Officials said that since 2008, nearly 1.15 crore visitors have visited the Kankaria lakefront, and over 20 lakh visitors have taken a ride in the Atal Express and the Swarnim Jayanti Express mini trains.

Apart from the trains, festivals, small gatherings, educational tours, jogging, informal meetings and picnics have also become regular features at the Kankaria lake.

Eligibility test must for primary teachers in Gujarat

Now, even candidates seeking a teacher’s jobin class I to VII will have to clear the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET). The state education department has made this test mandatory for those teaching in primary schools from June 2011.

The education department recently issued a circular stating that all candidates applying for jobs in primary schools to teach in class I-VIII will have to appear for the TET and score minimum 60% marks in the test.

Minimum 60% marks required in TET
Test will included Logic, Aptitude, General Knowledge and Teaching attitude.
Test Score will be valid till 5 years
Candidate can take as many as tests
Apart from score in the test, marks scored by candidates in HSC, graduation, post-graduation, BEd courses will also be considered to make the final merit list while recruiting teachers in primary schools.
Test is compulsory for all kind of schools

Education department officials that the introduction of TET is in lines with the department’s initiative to improve the over-all standard of education. Recently, TET was made compulsory for candidates seeking jobs in secondary and higher secondary schools from June 2011. This exam will be conducted by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).
