New system: GU gives details of BSc exams

The Gujarat University (GU) has declared detailed information about BSc exams which will be conducted by the university following implementation of the Choice-Based Credit System(CBCS).

According to GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi, as per the new examination system to be followed, the internal 30 marks which used to be calculated solely on the basis of the college exams has been divided into four parts.

The college exams will be of 15 internal marks while five marks each would be given for assignment, seminar and attendance.

The overall passing mark has been raised from 35 to 36. Of the 70 marks final university exam, the student will be required to score minimum 25 marks while minimum 11 out of 30 internal marks will have to be obtained to pass a particular paper.

The 70 marks of the final paper will have four subjective questions while the fifth question will be objective in nature and will include multiple-choice questions, match the following and other questions.

Trivedi said that the student who have 75 per cent and above attendance will get five out of five marks in attendance while those with less than 50 per cent attendance will not be given any mark out of five internal marks. Those who have attendance above 50 per cent will be given one mark.

Significantly, the students in science who were so far given only six groups in physics, biology, chemistry and maths subjects will be given a choice of 20 groups from the first year itself. These will include subjects like computer science, microbiology, electronics, environment science and others.

GU launches probe into admission irregularities

At least 10 commerce colleges affiliated with Gujarat University (GU) could be in trouble as the GU has initiated a probe into admissions granted recently by these colleges.

The GU began the probe after receiving complaints that students with more than 65 to 70% marks are yet to get admission into any of these colleges. Several students’ unions made their representations before the GU vice-chancellor in the syndicate meeting on Sunday.
Admission process in more than 50 commerce colleges affiliated with the GU had recently concluded. These colleges have the capacity to admit a total of 26,000 students. Despite this, around 7,000 students are still waiting to get admission. Most of these students have more than 70% marks.
The GU authorities have asked the colleges to furnish details on number of admissions and the cut-off percentage in their merit lists.
“After scrutinizing these lists, if we find that the college managements have not followed the GU’s guidelines, we will definitely take action,” said a senior GU official.
Of the 50 colleges, 26 colleges have sent their details to the University.

Admission in commerce colleges in Ahmedabad is House full !

H L Commerce College sets the highest cut-off marks at 81 per cent, followed by GLS Institute of Commerce at 78.57 per cent; the second merit list was announced at most of the commerce colleges in the Ahmedabad.

Campus to career mela in Gujarat University

The first extensive recruitment exercise will be undertaken for the Gujarat University (GU) students on Sunday where students of arts, commerce and science will participate to get job. Some of the big names in the industry are expected to participate in the `Campus To Career’ mela to be held at the GU campus. Students will be offered pay packages ranging from Rs 8,000-30,000.

GU officials said that talks are also on with the industry representatives to give some relaxation to students who are selected for the jobs and yet want to pursue higher education along with earning their livelihood. “We intend to give jobs to at least 3,000 students”, GU officials said.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: 74 education MoUs signed

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 will begin on today January 12, but pre-event seminars like the International Round Table of Academic Institutions (IRAI) have already witnessed the signing of 74 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday.

Officials and academicians of Gujarat-based universities, industries and foreign universities and research institutes discussed and explored various areas of research at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar.

Nearly 33 delegates from 25 universities of 9 countries discussed the possibilities of research collaborations, students and faculty exchange programmes and curriculum development.

Officials from various foreign universities shared information on the facilities and expertise available in their institutes.

14 MoUs have been signed by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) with University of Oklahoma, Kansas University and GeoGlobal Research Institute, student and faculty exchange programme.
11 MoUs for curriculum development and visiting faculty with various industry bodies and business houses were also inked.
PDPU signed 12 MoUs with University of Western Ontario, University of Oklahoma, University of Sasktchewan, Texas A&M University and industries & institutes such as American Jewish Committee, Dahej SEZ, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd., Shell & Total, Shell Hazira, Tata Power, Jubiliant Oil & Gas, Institute of Seismological Research and Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute (GIDM).
Gujarat University did not sign a single MoU with a foreign institute or industry.
Bhavnagar University signed 10 MoUs with industries of the state.
Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat signed 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

However, details of most of the MoUs are yet to be discussed. “These MoUs have been signed on primary discussion and expressions of interests. However, the minute details will now have to be worked out. These are only MoUs for research activities and students and faculty exchange programmes. MoUs for investments in the education sector in the state would be signed on January 12 during the global summit,” the Gujarat state principal secretary said.

The state through its Knowledge Consortium of Gujaratsigned 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

Gujarat University launch courses in Yoga

These are: Two certificate courses for yoga instructors, a certificate course in yoga for character building, diploma in yoga, health and character and diploma in Ayuryogam.

Semester system in PG:GU seeks faculty detail

In order to streamline the semester system to be introduced in MCom, MSc and MA from this academic year, Gujarat University has asked its 150-odd post-graduation (PG) centers to furnish details on academic sessions, teaching staff strength and number of students within 15 days.

“We have sought details of lecturers’ role in the centers, whether they also teach in graduation courses, their attendance, number of lectures they take, their tenure, and their performance. That apart, we also need to know students’ attendance in these centers. Also sought is the details of research undertaken by students and non-teaching staff to ensure better administration of the centers,” said university vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi.

The main objective behind seeking PG centers’ report is to assess whether the centers will be able to complete the syllabus on time under the soon to be introduced semester system, as there will be six exams per semester instead of four papers that used to be taught in a year.

If the centers fail to submit the detailed report within a fortnight, the university will take disciplinary action against them. It may be noted that most of the PG centers are located in the premises of different colleges and have skeleton staff-strength, mostly consisting of visiting faculty.

Colleges urge GU to conduct FY, SY exams

A World is moving toward centralize process while Gujarat University want decentralize exam system.

A body representing college principals urged the Gujarat University (GU) on Thursday to reconsider its decision of not conducting examinations for first-year and second-year students. The association said that if colleges were allowed to hold exams in FY and SY, then quality of students would decline.
Earlier this year, the varsity had announced its decision to give up the responsibility of conducting exams in the aforesaid years. It said that it would hold tests for only third-year students. Academicians say the move will reduce GU’s burden, but it will lead to malpractice by colleges, who may try to favour their students or issue marksheets to undeserving candidates.

On Thursday, the association of college principals raised these concerns in front of GU V-C Parimal Trivedi. It said that marksheets issued by colleges to FY and SY students might not be recognised by foreign institutes. “FY and SY marksheets will lose significance if GU does not conduct exams in these years. Moreover, some disreputable colleges may make issuing marksheet a business,” a principal said.

He said that when colleges used to hold SY exams, several cases of cheating and malpractice were reported. “This had prompted the GU to conduct tests in all the three years. The university should continue with this practice,” he said.

16 new colleges qualify for Gujarat University affiliation

Only 16 of the 92 new institutes seeking affiliation with Gujarat University qualify to launch their courses as per the new rules issued by University Grant Commission (UGC). The report of the same has been submitted by scrutiny committee appointed by need committee of Gujarat University on Tuesday.

These 92 applications were for new self-financed institutes offering bachelor of business administration (BBA), bachelor of computer application (BCA) and bachelor of commerce (BCom).

According to UGC’s new rules, the institute should have at least five acres of land. If an institute does not qualify on this basic criteria, it will not be considered.

“Based on the report of scrutiny committee, the need committee will be further sending the Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) that will further look into the institutes for infrastructure, faculty, building and other details according to UGC and university requirements. The LIC will visit these campuses soon and submit report in the syndicate meeting,” said vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, Parimal Trivedi.

5,800 seats available in BCom colleges in Ahmedabad

Students left without admission have only applied to top 10 colleges. As many as 3,800 seats are lying vacant in several other colleges even as GU has added 2,000 more seats.

On one hand Gujarat University has issued advertisements in the papers that it is coming up with new B Com, BBA and BCA colleges and on the other it says right now there are more than enough seats available for these courses.

When contacted Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said: “There are sufficient seats for B Com course and all the students will be accommodated. There’s no need to worry. Students who are left without admission have only applied to the top 10 colleges in the city. They have not filled forms in the other colleges that have 3,800 seats still vacant.”

He added: “Apart from that, I have also increased 2,000 seats. So, in all 5,800 seats are available for B Com course. Today, we had issued forms for admission to 2,000 seats. We received 1,099 filled-in forms.”

The scene at GU’s main building was chaotic on Monday morning as students lined up in long queues to buy admission forms for 2,000 new seats in B Com colleges. However, not adequate provisions were made to ensure the sale of forms goes on smoothly. GU had not even announced that the sale of forms will begin at 11 am. So students started queuing up as early as 9 am.

The admission forms were being given away from a single window. Police and university security guards were called in to control the crowds. A source at one of the BCA colleges in the city alleged that GU had cut down on number of seats per division
