Gujarat University has asked research students to submit at least one copy of their PhD theses (except those on language subjects) in the English language. Also, a copy of the thesis has to be submitted to the Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET).
According to GU officials, the decision was taken after the University Grants Commission (UGC) made it mandatory for all research students to submit at least one copy of their PhD thesis, except those on language subjects, in English. Till now, it was not mandatory to submit a copy of a PhD thesis in English.
Officials further said that researchers would have to send a copy of their PhD thesis to the INFLIBNET so that it can be posted online. This will allow anyone to access a thesis. Later, if the Gujarat University gets a report about plagiarism, action will not only be taken against the researcher but also the guide. “The university will blacklist the guide and not allow to him guide any new PhD students,” an official said.
Rule 11 of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Ordinances states: “The candidate should submit the PhD thesis in English except when it is related to an Indian language or a modern European/Asian language, where the thesis should be in the language concerned. However, the rule also states that before submitting the final thesis, the student should submit a synopsis in English, even in the case of languages. However, these rules, which have been implemented for the new academic session, will be applicable to all those who have registered for PhD on or after November 30, 2009.”Like
