17 colleges ordered to appoint qualified teachers for PG courses by GU

After AICTE allows 17 colleges to run postgraduate courses, GTU orders them to appoint faculties with proper qualification by August 25 if they were really keen on offering the courses.

A high-level meeting of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) officials was called on Tuesday to discuss All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) approval to 17 colleges to run postgraduate courses like MPharm, MTech, and ME. The committee has ordered these colleges to appoint faculties with requisite qualifications by August 25. In case these colleges fail to appoint faculties, they will not be allowed to offer PG courses in affiliation with GTU. “Normally only colleges that have taught graduate-level courses for four years are allowed to introduce PG-level courses. But these 17 colleges don’t meet the criteria. Moreover, they don’t have enough teachers with requisite qualification to teach PG courses,” said a committee member on condition of anonymity.

According to GTU sources, the four years of teaching graduate level courses gives colleges time to set up infrastructure that will enable them to allow PG courses too. But these colleges have no such infrastructure. In such a scenario, the quality of education will be affected. Postgraduation requires higher-level of teaching and guidance.

As per norms, for PG courses, there should be a professor and an associate professor, with one of them being a PhD. “GTU has relaxed the norms a little and if the professor has more than five years of experience in teaching, he can teach a PG course despite not having a doctorate. However, we don’t know why AICTE has granted permission to these 17 colleges to teach postgraduate courses.”

Admissions to begin
The admissions for M Pharm will be held from August 25 to August 27 and M Tech admissions from August 28 to August 31. The approved colleges have been asked by GTU to appoint necessary teachers by August 25.

If they fail to do so, they won’t be allowed to teach PG courses while being affiliated to GTU and the admission committee for professional courses will not consider them for the admission process.

However, authorities of these colleges say, “It is not always easy to get faculties to teach masters-level courses in Computer, IT and several other branches. Those who are highly qualified in these subjects are not keen to teach. So we have to settle for teachers who are less qualified but interested in teaching the subject.”

GTU council wins international award

The initiative of bringing engineering students in Gujarat face-to-face with the real-life issues of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has gained recognition at the ‘World Education Summit 2011′.

The initiative called ‘GTU Innovation Council’ started jointly by Gujarat Technological University and Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (Sristi) has been given ‘Best Jury Award for Interface Between Academia and Industry in Higher Education’ at the summit held at New Delhi from July 13 to 15.

GTU Innovation Council has arrangements for students that lets MSMEs in the state point out real-life problems faced by them. The students are expected to innovate solutions as part of their academic projects.

While the students get credits for the project, the MSMEs get solutions to their industrial problems.

The varsity’s vice-chancellor Akshai Aggarwal said, “The idea of GTU Innovation Council is to rekindle passion for innovation in the young minds, encourage them and make them the agents of change. The initiative need not be limited to the state but shall spread through India.”

GTU (Gujarat Technological University) degree to diploma forms released

As per the announcement made by the Gujarat Technical University (GTU) the Forms for diploma to degree courses are now available. The forms are to be accepted till July 7.

There are more than 8,999 seats in diploma to degree courses in Gujarat. From this year, the students of BSc in Maths are also now eligible to apply for degree engineering cources. While in last year there were 10% seats reserved for this, this year 20% seats are reserved which is double.

GTU & Gujarat Goverment Portal site are down!

From today morning both websites GTU ( www.gtu.ac.in ) and Gujarat Goverment Portal (www.portal.gujarat.gov.in) are down due to some reason. GTU is leading technical university in Gujarat who handle all work of technication cources like MCA, MBA, BE/ Diploma.

Due to this all admission work has been suffered. Not able to understand how can such important website can be down.

Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET) merit list to be declared on July 8

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) will declare the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET) merit list on July 8, six days after the second and final phase of the GCET examination gets over, confirmed Dr GP Vadodaria, GTU’s controller of examinations. The test is being conducted in two phases. The first phase was held from June 25 to 28 and the second phase began on June 29 and will end on July 2.

Dr Vadodaria said, “23,740 students registered for phase I, of which 22,827 appeared for the test. A total of 4,596 students took the exam from Ahmedabad at five centres in phase I.”

Regarding the number of students at the five centres in Ahmedabad, Dr Vadodaria said that at the Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering (IITE), 1,280 students took the exam; 1,1319 students appeared at the LJ Institute of Engineering and Technology; at Nirma University, 793 students appeared for GCET; at Som Lalit Education and Research Foundation, 750 students took the exam and 454 students sat for the exam at Vishwa Karma Government Engineering College. On day one of the second phase, Dr Vadodaria said that out of the registered 6,929 students, 6,491 appeared for the test.

GTU sets up MBA skills council

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) held its first meeting of the MBA skill development councils at Shri Jairambhai Patel Institute of Business Management and Computer Applications at Gandhinagar on June 25.

In a new initiative, GTU has set up MBA skills councils in the areas of financial services, human resources and marketing management. The skill councils have been set up to improve the innovation and application of skills and knowledge of the management students.

While the purpose of the meeting was to give a boost to these skills development councils, it was taken part by 32 top notch professionals from industries and 23 professors. Many directors from various management institutes of Gujarat were present in the meeting.

Vice-chancellor of GTU Akshai Aggarwal said the councils will also help students get into immersion programmes in various areas. He said, “As the state is developing, the needs for knowledge workers is also increasing. Thus GIFT city would require as many as 60,000 knowledge workers.”

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: 74 education MoUs signed

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 will begin on today January 12, but pre-event seminars like the International Round Table of Academic Institutions (IRAI) have already witnessed the signing of 74 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday.

Officials and academicians of Gujarat-based universities, industries and foreign universities and research institutes discussed and explored various areas of research at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar.

Nearly 33 delegates from 25 universities of 9 countries discussed the possibilities of research collaborations, students and faculty exchange programmes and curriculum development.

Officials from various foreign universities shared information on the facilities and expertise available in their institutes.

14 MoUs have been signed by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) with University of Oklahoma, Kansas University and GeoGlobal Research Institute, student and faculty exchange programme.
11 MoUs for curriculum development and visiting faculty with various industry bodies and business houses were also inked.
PDPU signed 12 MoUs with University of Western Ontario, University of Oklahoma, University of Sasktchewan, Texas A&M University and industries & institutes such as American Jewish Committee, Dahej SEZ, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd., Shell & Total, Shell Hazira, Tata Power, Jubiliant Oil & Gas, Institute of Seismological Research and Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute (GIDM).
Gujarat University did not sign a single MoU with a foreign institute or industry.
Bhavnagar University signed 10 MoUs with industries of the state.
Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat signed 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

However, details of most of the MoUs are yet to be discussed. “These MoUs have been signed on primary discussion and expressions of interests. However, the minute details will now have to be worked out. These are only MoUs for research activities and students and faculty exchange programmes. MoUs for investments in the education sector in the state would be signed on January 12 during the global summit,” the Gujarat state principal secretary said.

The state through its Knowledge Consortium of Gujaratsigned 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

GCET: GCET to take place in June

GTU had earlier announced that the exam will take place in Feb
GCET-2011 will be held in June instead of February as announced earlier.
The institute heads were of the opinion that the GCET-2011 should be held in June as per the earlier schedule because the colleges had already fixed the schedules for other exams to be held in February

GCET examination to be conducted in Feb 2011

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to conduct the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET) for MBA and MCA aspirants in February 2011.

The decision is aimed at helping MBA and MCA colleges finish their admission process earlier. The move to advance GCET will further cut the waiting period for students, said GTU sources.
They said they wanted to hasten the process further in 2011. “We will ask the student to fill the enrollment forms in December 2010 for GCET-2011 exams. However, the exam will be conducted online in the last week of February, 2011,” said a source.

The admission process of GCET-2010 went on smoothly as compared to last year when applicants had to face technical glitches such as server breakdowns while taking the two-hour online test.

However, considering that the final year marksheets of BA, BCom and other faculties’ marksheets will not be out until May, GTU is in talks with the universities to announce the results by early May so that by June, the classes can begin.

The admission process will be based on the GCET merit list of the students, said officials. “Student appearing for GCET are generally hardworking. Therefore there is very little possibility of them clearing GCET and failing in the TY exam. I don’t see any problem in conducting GCET a little early. It will infact benefit everyone,” said a source.

Students who clear the GCET but either fail in their graduation exams or are not able to submit their marksheets to GTU on time, their MBA and MCA admissions will automatically be cancelled. The two-hour test will be held a little early because the varsity wants to reduce the time students have to wait to decide whether they want to get admitted to an MBA or MCA college in Gujarat or pursue a course in some other state.

If GCET is conducted in February, colleges can start their admission process by June. Every year the classes begin in September

69 adhoc lecturer needed in GTU for new engineering colleges

The six engineering colleges and one polytechnic that have been set up in Public-Private Partnership model by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) are recruiting faculty members. GTU has issued a notice that these institutes require 69 faculty members. The interviews for the interested applicants will be held on July 11.

“Engineering colleges in Amreli, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Navsari and Mehsana have a requirement of 55 faculty members, who will be given appointment on an adhoc basis. These openings are in all disciplines civil, electronic, computer, mechanical, electrical, information technology and mathematics. There are 14 adhoc faculty members required in the same disciplines in the polytechnic as well,” said a GTU senior official.

Interested candidates have been asked to submit their applications in the format given by GTU. The application form is also available on the website of GTU.

The adhoc faculty will be recruited on a contract of 11 months at a monthly remuneration of Rs 25,000. The educational qualifications needed for applying for the post is a Master of Engineering (ME) or Master of Technology (M Tech) with first class. The upper age limit for applying for the job is 35. Also, only Gujaratis can apply under reserved categories.
