    • ]]>     The state government, which has been bandying about large investment figures following the vibrant summit, is yet to pay salary for the month of December to teachers of 450 grant-in-aid colleges. The delay has put these teachers, 7,500 in all, in a real bind as many of them have loans to repay and insurance payments to make. Some are even struggling to manage household expenses.

    Principals of these colleges, who are also waiting for their remuneration, claim this is the longest delay to date. They have urged the higher education department to resolve the issue at the earliest. “Usually, salaries are paid on fifth or sixth of every month. This time, however, it is taking longer,” a principal, who didn’t want to be named, said.

    Teachers of grant-in-aid colleges say their bank credit has suffered because of the delay. “Many of us have to pay monthly instalments for home and vehicle loans. As we have not been able to make the payments this time, banks have imposed penalty,” a teacher said. “We have approached the accounts department of our college many times, but there is little it can do until the government provides necessary funds.”

    • ]]>     test_examThe Gujarat education department has initiated a move to appraise the performance of college lecturers with the aim of increasing quality of education and accountability among teachers. The department has sent out appraisal forms to all grant-in-aid colleges in the state and put it up on its website for lecturers to access, fill up and return to college principals. The measure was recommended by University Grants Commission long ago, but is being put into practice in Gujarat only now.

    Appraisals are voluntary for lecturers for now but will be made mandatory next academic year onwards. Sources said the education department felt the need to introduce the norm to access teachers’ performance for the purpose of pay hike, promotions and fix responsibility for laxity in duty. Hitherto, there was no record of what the lecturers taught, how long they attended duty and even whether they did duty or skipped it without sanction.
