7,500 professors waiting for Dec salary payment
The state government, which has been bandying about large investment figures following the vibrant summit, is yet to pay salary for the month of December to teachers of 450 grant-in-aid colleges. The delay has put these teachers, 7,500 in all, in a real bind as many of them have loans to repay and insurance payments to make. Some are even struggling to manage household expenses.
Principals of these colleges, who are also waiting for their remuneration, claim this is the longest delay to date. They have urged the higher education department to resolve the issue at the earliest. “Usually, salaries are paid on fifth or sixth of every month. College teacher’s need to fill appraisal form in Gujarat!
The Gujarat education department has initiated a move to appraise the performance of college lecturers with the aim of increasing quality of education and accountability among teachers. The department has sent out appraisal forms to all grant-in-aid colleges in the state and put it up on its website for lecturers to access, fill up and return to college principals. The measure was recommended by University Grants Commission long ago, but is being put into practice in Gujarat only now.
