Highest so far, 24 Gujarati students join IIT-G

The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-G) has given admission to 24 Gujarati students this year. This is the highest number of local students joining the institute ever since its inception four years back.

IIT-G director Sudhir Jain said that 116 students joined the institute in 2011. “This is the highest number of Gujarati students joining IIT-G in one year. In the last three years, total 55 Gujarati students had become part of the institution,” Jain said. Of the 24 students, 20 are boys while four are girls. Interestingly, there are also a number of Gujarati students who have decided to come back to their roots when they chose to opt for IIT-G over other IITs. The families of such students are settled outside Gujarat for generations now, but they chose to study at IIT-G as they consider it a fast developing and safe state.

Mihika Shah is one such student whose family hails from Vijapur in Guarat but has been in Mumbai since the past three generations. Shah was getting admission in IIT Kharagpur and Roorkee as well but she chose IIT-G as her parents considered that Gujarat was a safe state for a girl to study.

“Moreover, since IIT-G is connected with IIT Mumbai, I will get the benefit of good quality lecturers who come to teach here,” said Mihika. Tushti Shah of Ahmedabad has opted for chemical engineering stream in IIT-G. She too had other options but decided to come to Gandhinagar as it is fast gaining reputation among the new IITs. Tushti is daughter of a chartered accountant and had scored 93 per cent in HSC from Prakash School.

GTU sets up MBA skills council

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) held its first meeting of the MBA skill development councils at Shri Jairambhai Patel Institute of Business Management and Computer Applications at Gandhinagar on June 25.

In a new initiative, GTU has set up MBA skills councils in the areas of financial services, human resources and marketing management. The skill councils have been set up to improve the innovation and application of skills and knowledge of the management students.

While the purpose of the meeting was to give a boost to these skills development councils, it was taken part by 32 top notch professionals from industries and 23 professors. Many directors from various management institutes of Gujarat were present in the meeting.

Vice-chancellor of GTU Akshai Aggarwal said the councils will also help students get into immersion programmes in various areas. He said, “As the state is developing, the needs for knowledge workers is also increasing. Thus GIFT city would require as many as 60,000 knowledge workers.”

IIT-Gn( Gandhinagar) to launch new PG courses

IIT Gandhinagar (IITGn) is one among the new IITs started from the academic year 2008-09. It is located at Chandkheda, about 15 minutes drive from both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad is known for its excellent infrastructure with thriving industries, prestigious academic and research institutes and an ambiance which encourages excellence and entrepreneurship. Currently the Institute is functioning from the premises of the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College.
Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-G) will have a wider array of choices for new students as the institution is all set to introduce various new programmes in different areas this year. So far, IIT-G has been offering Bachelor in Technology (BTech) in mechanical, chemical and electrical streams.

From new academic session, the institute will introduce Masters in Technology (MTech) course in two branches including civil and chemical engineering. Apart from the masters, IIT-G will also start enrolling PhD students.

Talking about the new programmes, IIT Gandhinagar director Sudhir Jain said, “The intention of MTech programmes is to provide competent manpower for industries. Students of various engineering colleges will take part in the MTech programmes and the two years of IIT experience will make a difference to the students. We hope that some of the students could be retained in the PhD programmes as well.”

Apart from MTech, the PhD programme will enroll students from various disciplines including humanities, earth sciences, biology and chemistry and so on. While the institute plans to enroll around 12 research scholars, it will keep rolling out notifications periodically for intake of PhD students through out the year.

For the two masters programmes, though the initial intake would be only 24 students in this year, the institute plans to increase the number in the following years. Jain said, “We have been able to introduce the new programmes this year as the number of faculty has improved in these areas. We will keep introducing more MTech programmes in the other areas as the number of faculty gets better.”

IIT Gandhinagar had been gradually increasing the number of its faculties since it was set up in 2008. The number of faculty members has increased from 40 to 50 in the last one year. “We still need more teachers and we are looking for qualified candidates to recruit,” said Jain.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: 74 education MoUs signed

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 will begin on today January 12, but pre-event seminars like the International Round Table of Academic Institutions (IRAI) have already witnessed the signing of 74 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday.

Officials and academicians of Gujarat-based universities, industries and foreign universities and research institutes discussed and explored various areas of research at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar.

Nearly 33 delegates from 25 universities of 9 countries discussed the possibilities of research collaborations, students and faculty exchange programmes and curriculum development.

Officials from various foreign universities shared information on the facilities and expertise available in their institutes.

14 MoUs have been signed by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) with University of Oklahoma, Kansas University and GeoGlobal Research Institute, student and faculty exchange programme.
11 MoUs for curriculum development and visiting faculty with various industry bodies and business houses were also inked.
PDPU signed 12 MoUs with University of Western Ontario, University of Oklahoma, University of Sasktchewan, Texas A&M University and industries & institutes such as American Jewish Committee, Dahej SEZ, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd., Shell & Total, Shell Hazira, Tata Power, Jubiliant Oil & Gas, Institute of Seismological Research and Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute (GIDM).
Gujarat University did not sign a single MoU with a foreign institute or industry.
Bhavnagar University signed 10 MoUs with industries of the state.
Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat signed 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

However, details of most of the MoUs are yet to be discussed. “These MoUs have been signed on primary discussion and expressions of interests. However, the minute details will now have to be worked out. These are only MoUs for research activities and students and faculty exchange programmes. MoUs for investments in the education sector in the state would be signed on January 12 during the global summit,” the Gujarat state principal secretary said.

The state through its Knowledge Consortium of Gujaratsigned 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

Deloitte made 19 offers.
Two companies incubated at National Design Business Incubator of NID, Mediashala and Mayavi, visited the campus for the first time and recruited nine candidates. They offered a CTC of 4.2 lakh per annum.
The students were offered jobs as research engineer, software developer, business technology associate, analyst, application developer, system developer, and embedded system designer etc.
Other companies which also visited the campus were Deloitte, Saba Software, Airvana Networks, Fiserv, Anindus Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Kuliza, Capillary, Mu-Sigma, Mediashala, Evosys, Tata Technologies, Bit Mapper, Sankalp Semiconductors, Sapient, Dolcera, Robosoft, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, MindTree, Patni, Persistent and Accenture.

Patni computer to recruit 350 by 2011 end in Gandhinagar

IT and BPO service provider Patni Computer Systems plans to recruit 350 employees by the end of 2011, the company said today.

The new recruits would be based in the second delivery centre in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat which was inaugurated recently, Patni Computer Systems said in a statement here.

“We are looking at strengthening our presence in this burgeoning IT delivery hub and expect Gandhi Nagar to play a crucial part in this delivery expansion strategy…,” Patni Chief Executive Officer Jeya Kumar said.

The company currently has a headcount of 400 at the existing center and had planned to add 350 employees at the new center taking the total employees to 750 in the next one year, it added.

Patni currently has over 16,000 employees at global delivery centers across 16 cities. It has 30 offices across the Americas, Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific region the statement added.

Patni Computer opens new centre in Gandhinagar

Global IT and BPO services provider Patni Computer Systems has opened its second delivery centre in Gandhinagar.

According to the company, the move is triggered by a recent deal signed by Patni Computer to provide Product Engineering Services (PES) and Application Development Management (ADM) services to a leading UK-based enterprise.

Currently, the headcount at the company’s existing centre in Gujarat stands at 400. The company plans to hire an additional 350 at the new centre, taking the total to over 750 employees in the next one year.

Academicians converge at PDPU conference

Educationists, college teachers, principals, deans and vice-chancellors, from various universities across the world gathered at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University campus in Gandhinagar on Thursday. They were participating in a two-day international conference on ‘Themes Of Higher Education: Prospects Of Gujarat.’

In a keynote address, Professor Vivienne Baumfield from University of Glasgow, UK, stressed on the need for international education rather than global education. In her opinion, it builds long-lasting relationships and mutual understanding. “Gujarat is the growth engine of India. This state has taken the initiative in many sectors including education,” she said. At the conference, chief minister Narendra Modi promised that the findings of the conference will be implemented to make government policies more relevant to the people. Modi added that the Indian culture has faced many challenges and tribulations for several millenniums. “It is about time we overhauled our education system and syllabus, befitting the changing times,” he said.
