Gujarat loses 2,000 seats in government engineering colleges

There is some bad news for students seeking admissions to engineering courses. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has disallowed admissions on the 1,400 seats in six public-private partnership (PPP) colleges.

The state government had decided to start PPP engineering colleges last year and filled up the seats as it expected AICTE approval to come through. However, AICTE realised that these seats were filled up without its approval and shot back a letter stating that since colleges in Vadnagar, Jamnagar, Navsari, Porbander, Amreli and Surendranagar were not approved last year, there was no question of granting them recognition.

Another 600 seats in Rajkot, Morbi and Surat were also in trouble for the same reason.

This has put the Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (Technical) in a dilemma as the last round for making changes in preferences given by students was July 9. Officials said that if the colleges were given approval at the eleventh hour, it would have delayed the entire admission procedure. The government has already initiated process of getting the seats back for this academic year itself.

Earlier, there was an increase of 6,230 in state colleges. In the nine new self finance college the total seats was 2,580 while the remaining 3,650 seats were in the existing colleges.

Director, technical education RB Pirzada said the government was in constant touch with AICTE officials to get the seats back and admit the students this year.

Increase in engg, MBA and MCA seats likely in Gujarat

Come June and students will have ample opportunities in engineering diploma and degrees and diploma courses in MBA and MCA.

There is a likelihood of an increase in engineering diploma seats from 30,000 to 54,000 in the state, as 34 polytechnic institutes have applied for setting up new diploma colleges.

“We’ve received the applications. However, they will be cleared by the end of June,” said director of technical education Manish Bharadwaj.

“Also in degree engineering colleges, seats are likely to increase from 19,000 to 34,000,” said Bharadwaj.

Likewise, if the state government approves the applications of 13 institutes for starting new colleges, seats in MBA and post graduate diploma in business management (PGDBM) may also increase from 6,140 to 6,920.

In MCA, seats may increase from 2,850 to 3,150, as five institutes have applied for new colleges. Also, more than 15 engineering diploma colleges have applied for permission to start an additional shift.

Education Campus Changa to get university status

Education Campus Changa (ECC) is all set to get private university status from the state government. The educational campus managed by
Shri Charotar Moti Sattavis Patidar Kelavani Mandal, which so far offers programmes in technical professions, has also chalked out a Rs 250-crore plan to enter into healthcare education and delivery system this year.

According to sources, ECC which has been waiting to become Charotar University of Science & Technology (CHARUSAT) since its inception in 2000, is set to get state government’s nod during the monsoon session of state Assembly that ends in July.

ECC was set up on 100 acres of land in 2000 when it had started an institute with Rs 3 crore investment. So far, the trust Kelavani Mandal has already invested Rs 500 crore in five different institutes and an R&D centre that offers 14 programmes including engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and applied sciences with nearly 3,000 students.

“The mandal has envisaged foundation of healthcare in two areas. One is healthcare education where we plan to establish institutes for teaching and research. Another is healthcare delivery where we plan to establish hospitals and hold camps for community health and start mobile clinics,” said ECC’s registrar Devang Joshi, adding that for this the mandal has earmarked 48 acres of land.

Initially, they will offer 110 seats, with 60 seats in BSc nursing and 50 seats in BSc physiotherapy.

“As of now, we plan to start with three institutes namely Charotar Institute of Nursing and Charotar Institute of Physiotherapy from July 2009 and Charotar Institute of Dental Sciences & Research by 2010. Hence, along with three independent colleges, initially a full-fledged hospital with 100 beds will be established as a separate entity. Gradually, the hospital capacity will be augmented to 400 beds and eventually to 500 beds facilitating start of MBBS programmes. All this would take shape with Rs 250 crore estimated investment,” said Joshi.

To initially kick off the BSc nursing and physiotherapy courses from this academic year, ECC has also entered into an agreement with two popular healthcare trusts of the region, including Jalaram Janseva Trust of Dharmaj and Mahagujarat Hospital of Nadiad where students enrolled in BSc nursing and Bachelors in Physiotherapy (BPT) will be given training in hospitals managed by the two trusts.

ECC has handed over the task of designing the upcoming institutes to architect Bimal Patel, who has designed the Sabarmati Riverfront project.

Gujarat CM announces Govt. to set up 14 more engg colleges

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced the setting up of 14 new engineering colleges in the state to empower the youth by providing technical education.
Official sources said here today that Modi made the announcement here last evening after laying the foundation stone of a new engineering college campus to be built at a project cost of Rs 60 crores in Godhra Bypass Way.
He said that 14 districts of the state would get one each of engineering college as more skilled workers will be required in the near future after the recently concluded spectacular success of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, where the state bagged investment worth Rs 14 lakh crores. This would generate 25 lakh new employments.

He futher added that the state had 33 new Engineering Colleges and 40 new Polytechnics and decision has been taken to increase the engineering seats on Diploma/degree courses from the current 31,840 to 70,122 in the near future.
Adding that the Summit ended with a note and indications of ”Bharatna Bhagya Vidhata” (Determinants of the Future of India), Modi expressed his earnest desire that the Centre should understand the spirit of the summit as development of Gujarat will lead to the country’s development.

40K Enggineering Seats and Ahmedabad University comming in 2009!

Academic year 2009-10 may bring unprecedented positive tidings for students looking for admission in technical and professional courses in Gujarat. State is all set to add a whopping 21,000 degree and 26,000 diploma engineering seats. As investment climate warms up in Vibrant Gujarat, education department has put planning for making skilled manpower available in state on fast track. Almost double the number of existing degree and diploma engineering seats are set to be added in state next year. Currently, there are 19,000 degree and 30,000 diploma engineering seats available in state.

The move to raise number of seats will not only prevent students from packing off to other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh but also make an in-house pool of skilled manpower available to the industry that invests in the state. “We expect at least 40,000 more engineering seats to be added in the state shortly. With Gujarat emerging as the most attractive state for investment in the country, the move is to ensure that there is no scarcity of trained staff for industries in state,” said state director of technical education Manish Bharadwaj. Top education department officials said that 26 local institutes have put in applications to start degree engineering colleges here. Accordingly, 6,240 seats will be available if colleges are granted. Nearly 10 self-financed institutes (SFIs) have made an application to start a second shift which, if granted, is expected to add 2,400 seats. Sixteen existing SFIs have made a request to increase their intake adding 1,320 seats. As per All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) rules, 10 per cent additional seats are allowed if poor students are offered fee waiver which will help raise 960 seats. Fourteen new government engineering seats proposed will add 3,360 degree engineering seats while 2,820 seats will be added as existing 14 government engineering colleges propose to start teaching in second shift as well. Similarly, a slew of applications to start new private and government diploma engineering colleges and to begin courses in second shift as well will see an increase of 26,000 seats. “Gujarat has never invested in education like other states with mostly government colleges providing professional engineering courses. With more investment coming, private education sector is booming which is a positive development,” said a senior SFI management official Ahmedabad Educational Sociely has also submited proposal for Ahmedabad University. If government approve it than AES will create world class univercity named Ahmedabad University in Gujarat.
