IITGN campus developer bags HUDCO award in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad-based urban planning firm Design and Planning Counsel (DPC) has bagged HUDCO national award 2013 for its innovative design solutions. DPC is one of the firms engaged in developing Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN)’s permanent campus at Palej.
Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) has conferred the award under the category of new and innovative town design solutions/eco-cities to DPC for their design of a 300-acre integrated township at Mangalore.
Ajay Maken, minister for housing and urban poverty alleviation will hand over the award at a ceremony on February 22, 2013 at Delhi.

IIT-K alumni honour Rahul Sharma in Ahmedabad
IIT-Kanpur Alumni Association has decided to confer on Gujarat IPS officer Rahul Sharma the prestigious Satyendra Dubey Memorial Award. The award is to be presented on March 3 at Kanpur but Sharma has not made up his mind yet on whether to attend the function.
Best-known whistle-blower Satyendra Dubey (1973-2003) was a project director at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He was murdered in Gaya, Bihar after fighting corruption in the Golden Quadrilateral highway construction project. Like Dubey, Sharma is an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur. The award is meant for IITians and had gone to Arvind Kejriwal, a graduate from IIT-Kharagpur, in the past. More »
LikeShanghai Hitachi to invest Rs 500 cr to make compressors in Gujarat
Shanghai Hitachi Electricity Appliances Company, a joint venture company of China-based Shanghai Highly Group and Hitachi Appliances of Japan, will invest Rs 500 crore in the next two years in Gujarat to manufacture air-conditioning compressors and relevant refrigeration products to focus on India and West Asian markets.
The company has taken 40,000 square meters of land on lease at Changodar, an industrial area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, for this facility. It will give employment to nearly 1,000 people, and also provide job work to many SMEs.

The inspection team of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is being threatened by managements of colleges. The team was being intimidated to give a positive report despite shortages in infrastructure and staf,f sources said.GTU has formed an inspection team to inquire into facilities available at engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges. GTU officials said the team has been asked to carry out surprise checks. These teams have been asked to inquire into infrastructure, availability of staff, libraries and other facilities.
Sources in GTU said that whenever the team went to certain colleges, they were threatened and told to give positive reports. “The university has also received complaints from the teams and will definitely take action against such college managements,” said a GTU officer. More »
Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad students launch start-up to sell fireworks online in Ahmedabad
Busy Amdavadis can avoid the hassle of going to the market to buy crackers, this Diwali. For, a start-up offers the option of buying firecrackers with the click of a mouse.
Two final year students of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) have launched a website, which offers branded firecrackers on sale. The portal will procure fireworks from a factory in Sivakasi and deliver the order to people in Ahmedabad within two days of the order.
“We hit upon this idea while discussing Diwali and how it was getting increasingly difficult to arrange for all the celebrations with today’s hectic lifestyle. This is an area which is not serviced by a lot of companies. We are ramping up promotion for the portal on social media websites and setting up a creating a logistics team in Ahmedabad as Diwali approaches,” said Arshdeep Kaur, who started the venture with Kunal Gupta.
The students were inspired by their alumni who are successful entrepreneurs. “The IIM-A programme helped in multiple ways, not just in terms of course content but the overall experience. We launched this platform with the help and experience of IIM-A alumnus Manu Midha, who himself co-founded an online retail venture,” said Kaur. More »

A team of two students, who represented the state at National Rural IT Quiz at Bangalore were declared winners at the finals held on Thursday amid packed audience. The duo from Vadodara has won Rs 1 lakh cash prize along with mobile sets and other goodies.
Harshil Vyas and Digant Bakari, both students of class XI science at Saint Kabir School, became the national champions as they received the prizes from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India.
The National Rural IT Quiz, an initiative by department of science and technology, Government of Karnataka and Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS), is organized to encourage students of rural areas in the country to increase the awareness about Information Technology and its possibilities. This year, 14 lakh students from all over the country had participated in the preliminary rounds.
In the state, the Gujarat Council on Science & Technology ( GUJCOST), was the nodal organization for the event that organized district and state level competitions among rural schools in the state. The duo won the final round held at Gandhinagar on August 16. More »

No surprise questions, low turnout on CAT Day 1 in Ahmedabad
Though the first day of Common Admission Test 0(CAT) on Thursday was glitch free, it witnessed a low turnout at the two centres in Gujarat. Candidates appeared relaxed, with no surprises being thrown at them this year.
LJ Institute of Management Studies in Ahmedabad saw only 25 candidates appear for the first slot on Day 1 of CAT 2012. Mohammed Irfan Chanodwala, who appeared for the test, said, “There were no surprise elements in the test. It was simple and stuck to the course. The exam was also glitch free and we didn’t face any technical difficulty. More students will take the test towards the end of this month and beginning of November.” The other centre for the test in Gujarat is Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya, Gandhinagar. More »
State’s first private equity deal gives 25 cr boost to education in ahmedabad
Gujarat’s first private equity deal in education sector, Kaizen Private Equity LLC has picked up an undisclosed stake by investing Rs 25 crore ($4.5 million) in Ahmedabad-based Altus Learning Private Limited, which runs CalorX brand of schools. Altus, which is promoted by educationist Manjula Pooja Shroff, currently manages 16 schools, mostly in Ahmedabad.
“We chose Altus because it is instrumental in supporting schools with 6000 students and offers quality education,” said Sandeep Aneja, founder and managing director of Kaizen Management Advisors. Kaizen is one of India’s first education-focused private equity (PE) funds, which closed its maiden fund at nearly Rs 400 crore in June this year. More »

The Gujarat Technological University of Management Development Programme on developing womenentrepreneurshiporganised a programme with a view to motivate girls and women to become entrepreneurs and sensitize them to face the challenges of work-home-life balance.

Ahmedabad’s 1st girls’ college to go under hammer in Ahmedabad
What was once the landmark for girls’ education in the city, will soon go under the hammer. BD College of Arts and Home Science at Sankdi Sheri in walled city – one of the first girls’ colleges in the city – is up for sale.
The news has left several heritage enthusiasts worrying over the future of the ancient building. Residents in Sankdi Sheri say that a number of small-time developers, who have participated in the bidding process, plan to convert the building into a shopping complex.
Auction of the building will be conducted on October 10 by Ahmedabad’s charity commissioner. The college campus is spread over a 1,100 square yard plot while its building stands on just 33 square yards. More »
