Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad (MICA) will, once again, accept Common Admission Test (CAT) scores for admission to its flagship course this year. The institute had abandoned the CAT test from its admission process in 2010 and 2011 to use its own written test – ‘MICA test’ (MICAT).

The admission for 2012-14 batch of post-graduate programme diploma in management (communications) PGDM(C) will adopt a three step process of CAT, MICAT, and group exercise (GE) and personal interview (PI).

A recent directive given by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has forced MICA to consider CAT scores. “AICTE issued a notification last December making it compulsory for all management institutes registered under the council to consider the score of any one of five national tests – CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA or JMET- in the admission processes,” said associate director at MICA, Arbind Sinha.

“We chose to use CAT as we were already familiar with it.”

Apart from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the seven management institutes from the state which will use CAT scores this year are MICA, Amrut Mody School of Management of Ahmedabad University in Ahmedabad, Faculty of Technology Management of CEPT University in Ahmedabad, Institute of Management of Nirma University in Ahmedabad, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) in Gandhinagar, School of Petroleum Management of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University in Gandhinagar and Auro University in Surat.

In the years to come, MICA is likely to drop CAT scores from its admission process once again. “We are in the process of registering MICAT as one of the national tests recognized by AICTE,” said executive registrar of MICA, K G K Pillai.

Murthy urged the graduating students to shoulder the responsibility of bringing an inclusive and equitable change in the country.

Murthy was the chief guest at the first convocation of Ahmedabad University, which was held at its campus on Monday. The event conferred degrees to the university’s first batch of 110 MBA and 8 BBA students that graduated this year.

Talking to the students, Murthy said that it is their responsibility to bring inclusive and equitable change in the country because excellence in education is a rarity in the country and students like them who have had the privilege of getting such kind of education must take up the responsibility of bringing a change in this country. “You are the few blessed ones in such a paradoxical India,” said Murthy.

Pointing out the disparity in the country’s growth, Murthy said that while the country is considered to be a strategic global economic power and is an important voice in global matters, Indians are still far from achieving the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabbhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru. He further said, “We are still very far away from creating an India where every Indian will be provided with the wherewithal to develop and rise to their fullest stature, and where poverty, ill-health and ignorance will have vanished.”

“In a nation of 1.2 billion people, only 65% of the people are literate. Around 420 million people live in eight states alone. Around 350 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and another 250 million people do not have access to basic medical care and 700 million people do not have decent sanitation facilities.”

The event also saw the presence of chancellor of AU Sanjay Lalbhai, chairman of board of management of AU Prafull Anubhai, provost of AU AH Kalro and registrar of the university BM Shah.

They were planning to bring these colleges under AES-promoted Ahmedabad University (AU).
Now that is likely to happen next year as AES wants to first resolve issues raised by the teaching and non-teaching staff of these grant-in-aid colleges.

The five colleges in question — L D College of Arts, H L College of Commerce, M G Science College, L M Pharmacy and A G Teachers’ College — are currently affiliated to Gujarat University. The colleges have been opposing AES’s decision to convert them into SFIs and affiliate them to AU.

One of their concerns is the exorbitant fee the SFIs will charge from students. Another issue is that of salary scales, provident fund, pension and gratuity they are eligible for right now as employees of grant-in-aid colleges.

The teaching and non-teaching staff say that while grant-in-aid colleges offer job security, the same cannot be said of SFIs. Highly placed sources at AU said they will take a year’s time to resolve these issues.

“We assure the teaching and non-teaching staff that nobody will lose their job. A decision will also be taken regarding your post-retirement benefits. No one will be lose anything he or she has been entitled to as an employee of grant-in-aid college.

We need to work on how these benefits will be calculated once the colleges are brought under AU. Till everything is taken care of, the colleges will remain affiliated to GU,” an official said on condition of anonymity. He also assured that the admission of students will be strictly on merit and that scholarships will be awarded to meritorious students from financially poor backgrounds.

“Torrent Power will be awarding scholarships to poor students. We will not let money be an impediment in providing quality education. In the next one year, we shall have a proper system in place for processing admissions, salary and other benefits,” he said.

M G Science Institute, St Xavier’s College and C U Shah College will have admissions based on merit, while rest of the colleges in the city will have admissions on a first-come-first-served basis.

The question of whether M G Science falls under Gujarat University or Ahmedabad University still begs an answer. AU Registrar B M Shah said, “We have sent a proposal to the state government to transfer the affiliation of M G Science institute and others from GU to AU. However, the students will get a clear picture only by May 21.”

Availability of forms and payment of fees will continue till May 24. The first merit list will be announced on May 25 and 26, second on May 27 and 28, and the third will on May 29.

An important feature of the admission process is that for the first time, students will have to attach their photographs with the admission forms. The colleges have been instructed to clearly mention the admission rules and fee structure on their notice boards to make it easy for the students.

Moreover, this year, the syllabus will be taught in English and the seats will be limited at M G Science, St Xavier’s and C U Shah, to strike a balance with other colleges.

GLS wants university status. If proposal is accepted, the city will get its ninth varsity

Following the footsteps of the Ahmedabad Education Society that set up Ahmedabad University, the Gujarat Law Society is planning to set up its own university. The proposal will be submitted to the state government next month. If it is sanctioned, the city will get its ninth varsity.

The trust is scouting S G Highway for possible sites to set up the university.

GLS executive vice-president Sudhir Nanavati said, “We have always strived to provide quality education to our students. We are experts in the fields of arts, commerce, management, law and education. For a long time now, our management had been thinking of setting up a university so that we can gauge the market demand and introduce professional courses accordingly.”

In universities, especially those run by the state government, changing the syllabus is tough. Professors, policies and politics hamper change. The universities fail to adapt to changing times.

“To overcome such problems, we decided to set up Gujarat Learning University where we will introduce short-term and long-term courses in the fields of Management,

Information Technology and Law. We are designing a 5-year law course. Nirma University is the only other private varsity in the state offering law studies,” said Nanavati.

Nanavati revealed the university will start functioning only after the building and its infrastructure has been set up. “We do not want to inconvenience students by making them run from one classroom to another. We will build a modern campus where students will get all that they need for quality education. We will also tie up with foreign universities for faculty exchange,” he said.

Nanavati asserted that the varsity will design courses in a manner that students will not have to struggle for a job once they pass out. About the number of varsities already in the city, he said, “Increased competition will force educational institutes to better the quality of education. They will design courses that keep up with the changing times and guarantee jobs once the students have graduated.”

The trust that gave Gujarat University shelter during initial days has decided to launch a university. Ahmedabad University (AU) of Ahmedabad Education Society (AES) is all set to offer admissions to students for the academic year 2009-10.

In the first year, the university will have two schools School of Management and Commerce and School of ICT with 3,135 students.

University status will bring academic, institutional, operational and financial autonomy to AES. Students will be admitted based on merit and there is also a financial aid policy for needy students.

One of the oldest education societies in western India, AES was established in 1935, when there was only one college in existence in Ahmedabad.

AES today runs 10 colleges and 11 schools and academic institutions in Gujarat. Five of the 10 colleges are self-financed and others are grant-in-aid institutions. It has hostel facilities providing residential accommodation to more than 1,000 boys and 250 girl students.

AU will offer graduate, postgraduate, doctorate degree, post doctorate programmes and professional diplomas. “AES has received a Letter of Intent from Government of Gujarat to establish AU. Each of the 11 schools will be headed by a dean and will offer several graduate and postgraduate programmes,” said Naishadh Parikh, AES secretary.

Governing body of AES includes chairman Shrenik Kasturbhai, eminent industrialist and philanthropist, president Sanjay Lalbhai, managing director of Arvind Mills, vice president Sudhir Mehta, chairman and managing director of Torrent Group, member Prafull Anubhai, industrialist and educationist and other eminent members.

The first set of programmes to be offered are bachelor of business administration (BBA) offered by HLBBA, bachelor of commerce (BCom) offered by HL Institute of Commerce, bachelor of computer application (BCA) offered by HLBCA and masters in business administration (MBA) offered by HLMBA.

Academic year 2009-10 may bring unprecedented positive tidings for students looking for admission in technical and professional courses in Gujarat. State is all set to add a whopping 21,000 degree and 26,000 diploma engineering seats. As investment climate warms up in Vibrant Gujarat, education department has put planning for making skilled manpower available in state on fast track. Almost double the number of existing degree and diploma engineering seats are set to be added in state next year. Currently, there are 19,000 degree and 30,000 diploma engineering seats available in state.

The move to raise number of seats will not only prevent students from packing off to other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh but also make an in-house pool of skilled manpower available to the industry that invests in the state. “We expect at least 40,000 more engineering seats to be added in the state shortly. With Gujarat emerging as the most attractive state for investment in the country, the move is to ensure that there is no scarcity of trained staff for industries in state,” said state director of technical education Manish Bharadwaj. Top education department officials said that 26 local institutes have put in applications to start degree engineering colleges here. Accordingly, 6,240 seats will be available if colleges are granted. Nearly 10 self-financed institutes (SFIs) have made an application to start a second shift which, if granted, is expected to add 2,400 seats. Sixteen existing SFIs have made a request to increase their intake adding 1,320 seats. As per All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) rules, 10 per cent additional seats are allowed if poor students are offered fee waiver which will help raise 960 seats. Fourteen new government engineering seats proposed will add 3,360 degree engineering seats while 2,820 seats will be added as existing 14 government engineering colleges propose to start teaching in second shift as well. Similarly, a slew of applications to start new private and government diploma engineering colleges and to begin courses in second shift as well will see an increase of 26,000 seats. “Gujarat has never invested in education like other states with mostly government colleges providing professional engineering courses. With more investment coming, private education sector is booming which is a positive development,” said a senior SFI management official Ahmedabad Educational Sociely has also submited proposal for Ahmedabad University. If government approve it than AES will create world class univercity named Ahmedabad University in Gujarat.
