Sumandeep Vidyapith among 44 deemed varsities facing derecognition

Vadodara-based deemed university Sumandeep Vidyapith will be one of 44 such varsities in the country whose recognition as a deemed university may be withdrawn. It’s the only varsity to be deemed as a university by Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

The MHRD filed an affidavit in Supreme Court on Monday stating that it intended to cancel the recognition of these universities. The affidavit stated that the government has accepted the recommendations made in this regard by high-powered PN Tandon Committee and the Special Task Force set up to suggest measures to tackle the problem. The affidavit added that the Review Committee came across several aberrations in the functioning of some of the institutions deemed to be universities. It found undesirable management architecture where families rather than professional academics controlled the functioning of institutions.

The high-powered committee and the task force had arrived at the findings after evaluating the functioning of 126 deemed universities in the countries. According to Centre, the task force has recommended that 44 deemed universities, which are to be de-recognised, should revert status quo ante as an affiliated college of the state university of jurisdiction so that students will be able to complete their ongoing courses and obtain degree from the affiliating university.

The Centre had filed the affidavit in the backdrop of apex court’s direction on a public interest litigation (PIL) on action against several deemed universities operating on purely commercial lines and violating all academic standards and norms.

When ToI contacted chairman and managing director of Sumandeep Vidyapith Mansukh Shah, he denied receiving any notification concerning withdraw of recognition. “The status of deemed university is not withdrawn. In fact, results of inspection conducted have been positive. We have received a letter from University Grants Commission that they have sent a communication to the human resources ministry for extending the recognition,” Shah added.
