The state education department has issued a ‘no admission’ notice for an engineering college in Rajkot. The notice was sent to the Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (JACPC) late on Friday. This will create a problem ahead of admission to engineering courses as the Sarvoday Kelavani Samaj (SKS)-run Atmiya Institute of Technology and Science has 480 seats.

This is not the first time that SKS, a prestigious educational trust in Saurashtra, has been mired in a controversy. In February, the Rajkot collector took over the educational trust for breach in its trust deed. Sources said, “The trust was given a plot on Kalawad road for religious purpose. Today, however, the plot houses the Vidya Vihar High School, School of Science, Virani Art, Science and Computer Science College and AITS.”

It is alleged that the trust mortgaged over 23-acre land allotted by the government to obtain a loan to construct the AITS building. The building was inaugurated in 2007. Today, the building is worth Rs 500 crore. The SKS, headed by Hariprasad Swami, is one of the two most powerful sub-sects of the Swaminarayan order in Gujarat.

Every year, 1,500 students apply for admission to various courses including MBA, MCA, diploma engineering and pharmacy offered by its college. If the row is over the plot, the future of these children will be under threat too.
