Popularity of BBA, BCA courses takes a beating in vadodara!

The courses that used to rake in moolah for MS University seem to be losing their popularity among youngsters. MSU’s Bachelors of Computer Application (BCA) programme which was seen as one of the most sought-after courses along with Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) programme has seen a drastic dip in number of aspirants this year.

On Sunday, only 1,223 students took the entrance test compared to last year when close to 2,000 aspirants competed for 120 seats. Similar trend was witnessed during BBA programme’s entrance test at Faculty of Commerce this year. In BBA this year, only 1,409 applicants filed forms for the programme with only 1,303 appearing for the entrance test against last year when 1,580 students had appeared for it. BBA programme has seen a decline of applicants despite officials increasing the intake of students from 120 to 180 from this academic year.

As per the data, this time around 1,265 aspirants collected the forms from BCA while only 1,241 were finally submitted. Only 1,223 students appeared for the written test with 18 aspirants remaining absent. The list of 120 students will be prepared based on the performance of the test and academic merits.

“There has been a drop in the number of aspirants this year owing to a host of reasons. Results of Gujarat board are not declared which might have kept students away. Besides, with increase in number of engineering seats, the rush has diverted there,” said co-ordinator of BCA programme Dr VA Kalamkar.

The BCA programme is losing popularity even as the course will be entering 10th year from the academic session in July. “We will have to evolve strategies to revive interest of students in the programme,” added Kalamkar.

One change that BCA officials plan to bring about from the new academic year is to start .Net programme from third semester onwards. “There is huge demand for computer professionals specialising in .Net technologies,” he said.
