Nirma engineering diploma student bags Rs 4.72 lakh package
In what could be seen as a trendsetter, an engineering diploma student of Nirma University has been offered a package of Rs 4.72 lakh by a German firm. The student who bagged the astounding offer is 20-year-old Kashyap Patel, a student of mechanical engineering at the Institute of Diploma Studies. This is definitely good news for diploma holders who are usually offered a maximum salary package of Rs 2.4 lakh per annum.
“We were 17 who appeared for the interview. Seven of us made it to the personal interview round. There was only one vacancy. I am thrilled to have been chosen for it,” said Patel, who was recruited by German firm Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield services company. His father is a cashier with a bank while mother is a homemaker. “I had to opt out of class 12 as I had to go through interviews for Navy wing. But I could not make it to the final selection. When I joined the university for diploma course, I felt I will have to pursue a degree course too, later. But now, I don’t see the need,” he said. There were more than 30 recruiters for the placement process this year, said Sachin Sehgal, placement and training officer. He said: “Of these, nine were companies who had come down for the first time.” Some of the big names that came scouting for talent were L&T, Essar, Reliance, HMEL, Tata Motors, Siemens, ABB, Welspun, Ultratech Cement, Tata Power, IFB Industries and Sintex Industries. Sehgal said: “For diploma students, a salary of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month is considered good. But this year, our diploma student has been offered thrice that amount.” He added: “What gives Kashyap an edge over others is his attitude and aptitude. He is not a top scorer but his vocational skills impressed the recruiters. They were looking for precisely that.”
AK Patel, placement officer at government polytechnic, said: “The maximum pay package that a diploma fresher is offered is Rs 20,000 per month, making it Rs 2,40,000 per annum. Rs 4.72 lakh package is a staggering amount. I am sure the student must have been really deserving.” He added: “There has been a positive change on the placement scene. Earlier just one or two companies would come down while today so many recruiters are willing to take freshers that we have to refuse them. In fact diploma students are more sought after than degree students as they have more knowledge of applications.”
