The Gujarat Technical University (GTU) was started nearly two years ago and is functioning without any governing authority. It formed a committee headed by director of IIT Gandhinagar, Sudhir Jain, in order to appoint a suitable candidate as V-C. The panel sent out letters to principals and directors of several institutes across the state, requesting recommendations of academicians who could be considered for the post.

Now the committee is flooded with over 50 applications, almost all of them from the college heads themselves. They are hoping to make it to the V-C’s post. Interestingly, lecturers in some other colleges also deem themselves capable enough to be university head.

Sources said the response has been overwhelming and ridiculous at the same time. “Several applicants are in no way capable of handling responsibility of such magnitude, and are fascinated just towards the glamour of the post,” said a university official, who did not wish to be named.

GTU has more than 250 colleges from across the state affiliated to it. However, as on date, the college has neither an appointed study board nor its executive and academic council in place. In fact, so difficult was the task of getting a suitable V-C that the university even considered running an advertisement in the papers!

But the aspirants’ are unfazed. “When others are trying to promote themselves, why must I be left out?” reacted a college principal in Ahmedabad, on condition of anonymity.

With an attitude like this, the university’s dilemma is not getting any better.
