Forensic science univ flooded with applications!
Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU) at Gandhinagar is flooded with applications from India and abroad alike. So far, the university has received more than 2,000 applications against total 65 seats for its first academic year 2009-10 which will begin from July. Applications have poured in not only from Indian science graduates but also qualified scientists from countries, including Burma, Nepal, Hong Kong among others.
Dr JM Vyas, director general of Gujarat Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS), said this is the first time in the country that students will be able to get methodical knowledge of forensics from the eminent experts. A first-of-its-kind university in India, GFSU is going to operate from the DFS campus in its initial days.
“Conventional courses do not cover all aspects of modern day forensics. As we handle the cases daily, we have ensured that course covers everything from crime scene management to investigative and behavioural psychology. The response is tremendous, the selection is going to be tough,” added Dr Vyas.
The university building is expected to be ready by the year-end, said officials. “While most number of applications are for the MSc course, students are also opting for the doctoral program,” said a DFS official.
“We are getting inquiries from Gulf countries, South east Asian countries and western countries about course and its content. Our website has got nearly 15,000 hits since its launch,” he said.
At the moment, the university is offering courses including master of science in forensic science, PG diploma in behavioural science and doctoral programme in research and development. These courses will be offered at Gandhinagar campus. “Apart from these, we have unlimited seats for online courses on information and network security. They have been designed on the basis of our experience in the field,” added Dr Vyas.
