Gujarat’s first IT SEZ clicks as Kendle logs on to Mindspace

IBM team explores SEZ for 5,000 employees unit

Gujarat’s first special economic zone for IT/ITES services is all set to kick start next month. US based Kendle group, a leading global clinical research organization (CRO) with about $ 415 million net revenues in 2009, has firmed up its plans to check into Mindspace, a Rs 1200 crore IT/ITES SEZ project developed by Mumbai-based K Raheja Corp on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor.

The developer has also held some initial talks with IBM as a five member team led by Amanda Garland, director, global strategy, IBM, visited the state and the SEZ on an exploratory basis on Wednesday, said government sources close to the development.

K Raheja Corp has been allotted about 93 acres of government land of which 68 acres is notified for SEZ while 25 acres is for supporting activities. The developer plans to set up about 15 buildings comprising about 10-15 million sq ft of space for IT/ITES.

“IBM is expanding its operations and it is scouting for 4.5-5 lakh sq ft space that can accommodate about 5,000 employees. For this the company is exploring three countries including Mexico and South Africa. In India, IBM is exploring opportunities in Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The team has given a very positive impression of the state,” sources said.

IBM already has a presence in Raheja’s IT park in Hyderabad and the developer has a good track record with as many as 14 IT parks to its credit, the official added.

When contacted a senior official of K Raheja Corp declined to comment.

A senior government official close to the development meanwhile confirmed that they had given the necessary clearances to Kendle for setting up operations in Mindspace.

Kendle, a Nasdaq listed CRO, said in a recent filing on March 3 that it has received approval from Indian authorities to proceed with development of new operations center in a SEZ in the upcoming Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor.

The new unit is expected to be operational by mid April, it said.

“Continued expansion throughout the Asia/Pacific region is crucial to the future growth of Kendle. The new SEZ operations center will be ideally suited to deliver best-in-class services to our customers seeking high-quality, innovative and cost-effective solutions for their clinical development needs,” said Stephen Cutler, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

By 2012, analysts project that more than 65 percent of all FDA-regulated trials will take place outside the United States, according to Kendle. This is reflected in the Indian biotechnology market, which is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 30 percent, and the Indian CRO market, which is expected to see growth of 49 percent annually, according to the company.

Kendle’s SEZ operations center initially will house approximately 50 associates and is expected to scale up to approximately 300 associates in the near term.

Having missed the IT/ITES bus in the past, about 15-16 IT/ITES SEZs have been approved in Gujarat state in the last three years or so. While some players like DLF have scrapped their SEZ status, others like Vascon Engineering have said in the past that their projects have been put on hold. The state government is also in the process of taking back the land it had allotted for Satyam’s IT park in Gandhinagar. About three months ago, Ganesh Housing Corporation Ltd has sought extension of the validity period of formal approval beyond December 19, 2009 for its IT SEZ near Chharodi near Ahmedabad.

Univarsity Number Nine in Ahmedabad City!

GLS wants university status. If proposal is accepted, the city will get its ninth varsity

Following the footsteps of the Ahmedabad Education Society that set up Ahmedabad University, the Gujarat Law Society is planning to set up its own university. The proposal will be submitted to the state government next month. If it is sanctioned, the city will get its ninth varsity.

The trust is scouting S G Highway for possible sites to set up the university.

GLS executive vice-president Sudhir Nanavati said, “We have always strived to provide quality education to our students. We are experts in the fields of arts, commerce, management, law and education. For a long time now, our management had been thinking of setting up a university so that we can gauge the market demand and introduce professional courses accordingly.”

In universities, especially those run by the state government, changing the syllabus is tough. Professors, policies and politics hamper change. The universities fail to adapt to changing times.

“To overcome such problems, we decided to set up Gujarat Learning University where we will introduce short-term and long-term courses in the fields of Management,

Information Technology and Law. We are designing a 5-year law course. Nirma University is the only other private varsity in the state offering law studies,” said Nanavati.

Nanavati revealed the university will start functioning only after the building and its infrastructure has been set up. “We do not want to inconvenience students by making them run from one classroom to another. We will build a modern campus where students will get all that they need for quality education. We will also tie up with foreign universities for faculty exchange,” he said.

Nanavati asserted that the varsity will design courses in a manner that students will not have to struggle for a job once they pass out. About the number of varsities already in the city, he said, “Increased competition will force educational institutes to better the quality of education. They will design courses that keep up with the changing times and guarantee jobs once the students have graduated.”

Google India targets Gujarat SMBs for online advertising campaign!

Google India is eying small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Gujarat for its online advertisement programme AdWords by the end of this year, the company’s online sales head, Sridhar Seshadri, said.

“Gujarat with over 7,000 SMBs is the hub of entrepreneurship in the country and has tremendous potential of online advertising,” Seshadri said while announcing Google India’s new service called ‘JumpStart’ for the state.

Under this service Google will offer free expert support to SMBs to build an online advertising campaign to attract new customers.

“This service was first tried out on a pilot basis in Chandigarh and, based on the results, we are extending this initiative to empower more SMBs,” Seshadri said.

Google India wants to reach out to 70-80% of the SMBs in Gujarat in the next one year to get them to advertise online using AdWords, he said.

Seshadri said that for this, Google is planing a number of workshops with the SMBs. “Google’s AdWords programme provides a cost-effective platform to SMBs who can start advertising online with low budgets and grow as per their business demands,” he said.

SMBs constitute 80% of business enterprises which often face advertising challenges owing to the high costs involved, he said.

He also said that Google AdWords enables SMBs to target precisely, pay only for results, and stay firmly in charge of costs.

According to him, there are about 15,000 enterprises which are currently using AdWords for online advertising, of which about 20% are from Gujarat.

Seshadri said Google’s focus would be primarily on export units, those providing financial services, and manufacturing and ancillary units.

About JumpStart, he said it will provide a quick and easy way to SMBs to get their Google advertising campaign off to a successful start.

Engineering giants to recruit more: CII Baroda

VADODARA: Top honchos of the engineering giants from the state met during the Engineering Summit 2010 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Thursday here to discuss the way ahead for engineering industries in the country. Issues like technology management practices, robotic applications in achieving engineering excellence, product development and innovation and others were discussed in the day-long summit at Gateway Hotel.

Representatives from several engineering biggies like Bombardier, L&T, Alstom, Areva, Siemens Ltd and Elecon aired their views during the summit in which CII-KPMG report on Resilience and Renewal of Engineering Sector was also released. The speakers held an optimistic view about the future of Indian engineering sector after it suffered setback during the recession.

The CII-KPMG report on Resilience and Renewal: Engineering Sector Looks Ahead highlighted critical lessons learnt by the engineering industry in the last few years, and how this learning has been factored in by them into their growth strategies. “We have to take opportunity of the recent global slowdown and work on reverse innovation system. Till date, products were invented and manufactured in western markets and then Indian manufacturers replicated those products to suit Indian markets. But, now Indian manufacturers should invent new products at low price that would be replicated in western markets,” Bombardier Transport India president and managing director Rajeev Jyoti said during the summit.

Madhav Digraskar, president, ABB Ltd talked about the growth prospective of engineering industries with focus on small and medium scale enterprises and the need to give them thrust by providing quality infrastructure. Other speakers at the summit included Dr Carstene-S Berendsen, Vice President, oil & gas division, Siemens Ltd, Atul Garg, chairman-CII central Gujarat zonal council, Suresh Nair, manufacturing head of Alstom India, Pranav Adani, chairman CII Gujarat and Gajendra Chandel, president Tata Autocomp Systems Ltd

Placement at MSU’s science faculty goes hi-tech!

VADODARA: Campus placement at MS University (MSU) went high tech with science faculty arranging a video conference facility at its placement cell. It will also be the first faculty in the varsity to offer such facility to boost the placement process as well aims to provide gateways to interact with faculty members from foreign universities. This facility will be inaugurated on Friday and will be put to use right away.

Be it job interviews or conducting virtual classrooms, this facility is expected to make things easier from now onwards. The faculty is eyeing greater collaboration with universities abroad to conduct special guest lectures virtually. Even recruiting companies will now be able to interview prospective students without coming to the city.

“We were working to put this system in place for sometime now. This initiative has been taken to speed up placement process. Secondly, we also want to orient our students to scientific advancement taking place globally. That will now be possible through virtual classrooms. These sessions can be recorded and shared as well,” said officiating dean of science faculty, Nikhil Desai.

“This move is expected to attract more companies to the faculty for conducting campus placement. For companies, it would economical way to pick up talent from the faculty and students too need not incur expenditure to attend interviews. Our faculty managed to set-up this unit with faculty funds and in coming months we are going to add other advanced technologies,” added Desai.

If you have an idea and don’t know how to turn it into a business, Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM-A has the solution.

‘iWeekend’ where for the first time, a highly motivated group of 50 entrepreneurs and professionals will select a few ideas and work together to launch a version of the products. All of this in a weekend. Of the final presentations, some products will be selected and funded by venture capitalists and other funding agencies.

“iWeekend is a non-profit organization started in Spain in 2008 with the mission of promoting culture of entrepreneurship in new technologies. Since then, it has conducted several programmes,” said Aditi Gupta from CIIE.

This year, they will conduct three programmes in India — from March 12 to 14 in Bangalore, March 19 to 21 in New Delhi and finally in Ahmedabad from March 26 to 28.

The iWeekend will be organised with the help of Nadathur Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (IIM Bangalore), CIIE (IIM Ahmedabad) and Indus Entrepreneurs, Delhi chapter.

“Registrations have begun for the event meant for professionals, freelancers, programmers, designers, marketers, businessmen, lawyers and even students. Technology innovation will be the main theme where ideas based on software and internet-based applications will have to be developed,” added Gupta.
