874 schools in Gujarat await permission to start academic session

Mahindra to invest Rs 3,000 cr: Vibrant Gujarat 2011

Farm equipment-to-software group Mahindra & Mahindra on Wednesday said it will invest Rs 3000 crore in Gujarat to step up presence in the hospitality and real estate sectors in the state. “Our group companies have signed six MoUs with the Gujarat government totaling an investment of Rs 3000 crore,” Mahindra & Mahindra Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Anand Mahindra said here at the 5th Global Summit of Vibrant Gujarat. He, however, did not specify the time frame for these investments.

Mahindra Lifespaces , the real estate development arm of USD 7.1 billion Mahindra Group , has signed two MoUs with the state government. “Mahindra World City is developing a real estate project spread across 500 acres of land,” he said.

Another group company, Mahindra Holiday & Resorts , that runs the Club Mahindra resorts, will open seven new resorts in the state, Mahindra said, adding “all these new projects will create a lot of new jobs”. Moreover, investments will also be made on solid waste management and domestic waste management projects, he added.

Acknowledging that the investment by M&M is much less compared to those announced by other corporates during the summit here, Mahindra said “but we are doing it with passion”. “Mr Modi I hope you are not angry now as you have been saying that we do not make investments in the state,” he quipped.

Anil Ambani’s Reliance commits Rs 50,000 crore investment in Gujarat

Anil Ambani today said his Reliance Group will invest Rs 50,000 crore in Gujarat in the next 5—7 years on various projects as the firm looks to tap opportunities in the state. “We are committing to invest Rs 50,000 crore in the state of Gujarat in gas—based and coal—based power projects in the next 5—7 years”, Ambani said while speaking at the 5th Global Summit of Vibrant Gujarat here.

He said the investments would include very large investments in the cement sector in areas like Kutch, Porbandar and Junagadh. Already the group firm Reliance Power has undertaken development activities at Bharuch in Gujarat, where it is setting up a gas—based 8,000 MW power plant.

“I want to say that the group will play a meaningful role in driving the change and transformation happening in Gujarat,” he added.

Essar commits Rs 30,000 cr for Gujarat

Diversified conglomerate Essar Group said it will invest Rs 30,000 crore in Gujarat for projects in various sectors, including power and refinery. “Essar has committed to invest in Gujarat Rs 30,000 crore in power, refinery, ports and water infrastructure,” Essar Group Chief Executive Prashant Ruia said here during the 5th Global Summit of Vibrant Gujarat.

He, however, did not specify the timeline for the investments but said the earlier investments committed by the group in the state have been executed.

Essar Group is a major player in the port sector in Gujarat. Its ports and terminals business operates a crude oil and petroleum products terminal at Vadinar in the state.

The group is also constructing a dry bulk port at Hazira and a coal jetty at Salaya, all in the state.

It also has a 14 MTPA petroleum refinery at Vadinar which started commercial production on May 1, 2008.

Vibrant Gujarat 2011: Adani group announces Rs 80,000 cr investment

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani today announced Rs 80,000 crore investment in ports, power sector and infrastructure in Gujarat at the fifth edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 (VGS) here. He, however, did not specify the timeline for the investments. “On the occasion of VGS we announce an investment of more than Rs 80,000 crore in port, power generation and infrastructure in Gujarat,” Adani said, while speaking at VGS.
“While two new ports — one each at Hazira and Dholera are being developed we are also expanding the existing ports at Mundra and Dahej. With this we have a goal to create 200 million tonnes per annum of port handling capacity by the year 2015,” he said.

“In power generation while we have commissioned 2,000 MW at Mundra, additional 2,600 MW will be commissioned by March 2012. Further we are also building 3,300 MW at Bhadreshwar in Kutch, 600 MW at Dahej and 4,000 MW at Dholera SIR,” Adani said adding all the above power plants shall be completed to create a capacity of 15,000 MW by 2015.

“As an integrated infrastructure conglomerate we are also developing LNG terminal, infrastructure parks, supporting railway lines and supporting facilities,” Adani said.

“Projects of more than Rs 35,000 crore for which we had signed MoUs at the time of Vibrant Gujarat Summit in 2007 and 2009 have been fructified,” he added.

MSU inks 8 MoUs at Vibrant Gujarat

M S University has inked eight Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for research exchange programmes at the international round-table for academic institutions, which was held on Monday in Gandhinagar as part of Vibrant Gujarat summit.
The varsity has inked the MoUs with California State University, Tajen University of Taiwan and France-based INSA de Rouen. The MoUs for industrial tie-ups were signed with Finland-based Arbonaut Limited, Siemens Limited, Apollo Tyres, FAG and city-based Sanghvi Forging.

The MoU between MSU and California State University is in the area of entrepreneurship development and the one with Tajen University is in the areas of environmental science, biotechnology, climate research and water technology. France’s INSA de Rouen (National Institute of Applied Sciences) has inked an understanding with the university in the field of industrial mathematics.

A total 65 MoUs were signed during the round-table which saw presence of a number of foreign universities, including the University of Oklahoma, University of Nevada, Korea Institute of International Economic Policy and University of Saskatchewan, Canada apart from California State University and Taiwan’s Tajen University.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: 74 education MoUs signed

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 will begin on today January 12, but pre-event seminars like the International Round Table of Academic Institutions (IRAI) have already witnessed the signing of 74 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday.

Officials and academicians of Gujarat-based universities, industries and foreign universities and research institutes discussed and explored various areas of research at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar.

Nearly 33 delegates from 25 universities of 9 countries discussed the possibilities of research collaborations, students and faculty exchange programmes and curriculum development.

Officials from various foreign universities shared information on the facilities and expertise available in their institutes.

14 MoUs have been signed by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) with University of Oklahoma, Kansas University and GeoGlobal Research Institute, student and faculty exchange programme.
11 MoUs for curriculum development and visiting faculty with various industry bodies and business houses were also inked.
PDPU signed 12 MoUs with University of Western Ontario, University of Oklahoma, University of Sasktchewan, Texas A&M University and industries & institutes such as American Jewish Committee, Dahej SEZ, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd., Shell & Total, Shell Hazira, Tata Power, Jubiliant Oil & Gas, Institute of Seismological Research and Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute (GIDM).
Gujarat University did not sign a single MoU with a foreign institute or industry.
Bhavnagar University signed 10 MoUs with industries of the state.
Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat signed 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

However, details of most of the MoUs are yet to be discussed. “These MoUs have been signed on primary discussion and expressions of interests. However, the minute details will now have to be worked out. These are only MoUs for research activities and students and faculty exchange programmes. MoUs for investments in the education sector in the state would be signed on January 12 during the global summit,” the Gujarat state principal secretary said.

The state through its Knowledge Consortium of Gujaratsigned 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

Gujarat inks MoU with British biz association

INDEXTb, the investment promotion wing of the Gujarat Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Britain’s Leicestershire Asian Business Association (LABA) to promote economic cooperation and commercial exchanges.A 16-member delegation of business leaders and government officials from the state is in Leicestershire to interact with business communities and host a road show to promote the Vibrant Gujarat global investment summit to be held in January 2011.

An official spokesperson on Monday said that the MoU was signed by Guruprasad Mohapatra, managing director of state-owned Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited, and Jaspal Singh Minhas, LABA president.

LABA is a leading British Asian business association in Leicestershire and the East Midlands region, fostering business development, training, inward investment and international trade for the last 25 years.

The MOU will enable both sides to improve economic and business cooperation between companies in their respective countries and set up joint ventures.

Tata AutoComp Systems(TACO) to set up five factories at Sanand

Tata AutoComp Systems (TACO) is setting up five auto component manufacturing plants at Sanand in Gujarat at an investment of Rs 300 crore, a state industry department official said on Tuesday.

“TACO is investing around Rs 300 crore to open five plants at Sanand in Gujarat in current financial year. These five new factories are part of the vendor park coming up at the Tata Nano plant site,” the official said.

TACO is amongst the largest automotive components groups in India, having revenues in excess of Rs 3,500 crore.

Canada becomes first western nation to partner ‘Vibrant Gujarat’

In a major boost to Gujarat, Canada has announced to become a partner country in the Vibrant Gujarat investment summit next year.

Held biennially immediately after Pravasi Bharatiya Divas since 2003, the Vibrant Gujarat summit is aimed at attracting foreign investment and knowhow into the state.

In a letter to Gujarat industry minister Saurabh Patel, the Canadian high commission in New Delhi has said that Canada has accepted the invitation to “be a partner country for Vibrant Gujarat 2011.”

The Canadian decision assumes significance as major western countries like the US and Britain have avoided dealing with Gujarat after the Godhra riots of 2002. In fact, the US had revoked visa of Chief Minister Narendra Modi in 2005 because of his alleged role in the riots.

The partnership decision comes within a year of the opening the Canadian trade office in Ahmedabad. The trade office was one of the three unveiled by Canada last year to deepen its trade ties with India.

“Canada has realised that Gujarat is a hub for business in India. It is a major thing for Gujarat and I am sure many Canadian companies will take advantage of the opportunities offered by the state in every sector – infrastructure, education, energy, transport, agro-food and health,” Winnipeg-based Gujarati businessman Hemant Shah, who has played a major role in promoting trade ties between Canada and his native state, said.

Canada is likely to be represented to top trade officials as well as major companies at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit January 12-13.

Bombardier, the supplier of Delhi Metro cars and global transport giant, and McCain Foods are the two major Canadian companies which have already set up shop in Gujarat.

While Bombardier has set up a $45-million train factory at Savli near Baroda, McCain Foods has a facility near Gandhinagar to supply French fries and onion rings to major super stores.

“But with Canada joining Gujarat as a partner for the summit, I am sure other Canadian giants such as BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) will also set up shop in India’s most industrialized and fastest growing state,” said Shah.
