HC notice to govt over TET for not including Socail Studies

The Gujarat high court on Tuesday issued notice to the state government asking them to explain why social science subject is not included in the teachers’ eligibility test (TET), which is mandatory before recruitment of primary teachers and vidhya sahayaks. National Council for Teachers’ Education (NCTE) last year made it mandatory for all aspiring primary teachers to clear an entrance test.

Accordingly, the state government came up with resolution for conducting the test. The TET is scheduled on June 12, and the last date for filling up the forms is June 2. On Tuesday, three aspirants approached the high court claiming that they could not submit online form, as social science subject is not available as an option. They are graduates in that subject.

Their inability to fill up the form would automatically result in their disqualification. Hence authorities should be directed to stall the examination and consider them as candidates by including social science as a subject, they requested. Justice J B Pardiwala has asked the authorities, including the director of primary education, secretary of state examination board and the state education department secretary, to file a reply by Thursday, when further proceeding is kept on this petition.

n addition, even BA/BEd with Urdu language as a subject was not in eligibility criteria for recruitment. Some of the aspirants approached the department on Monday and were assured of positive action by the officials.

9 institutions apply for university status from Gujarat

Nine institutions have applied to the state education department for being granted university status , government officials said. Last year, two institutions were granted the university status namely Auro University and Uka Talsania University. This year nine institutes that have applied are – Indus Technology, St Kabir, Charotar Arogya Mandal, Vardhman Charitable Trust, GH Raisoni National Institute, Institute of Technology and Management, Vadodara , and Shanti University.

A scrutiny committee of the education department met recently and discussed the applications. Main considerations during the discussion were financial health of these institutes. The committee gauged if these institutes could generate enough resources to provide quality infrastructure and education. The committee also discussed the pros and cons about giving university status to the institutions.

Gujarat University launch courses in Yoga

These are: Two certificate courses for yoga instructors, a certificate course in yoga for character building, diploma in yoga, health and character and diploma in Ayuryogam.

8 new medical colleges for Gujarat

Undeterred by the Medical Council of India’s rejection of its proposals for starting three new medical colleges in the current academic year, the Gujarat government has decided to set up eight new medical colleges in the state in the next two years.

Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas Sunday said that the the state government is going ahead with the preparations to set up eight new medical colleges, including the three for which proposals for which were rejected by the MCI earlier. ‘If not this year, we are sure to get approval for the same in the next year,’ he said.

The Gujarat government has already requested the MCI to review the decision to reject the proposals for the three new medical colleges at Sola in Ahmedabad, Gotri in Vadodara and the K.J. Mehta medical college in Bhavnagar. A high-level team led by the state health secretary and the director of medical education have already discussed the issue with authorities concerned in Delhi.

Besides these three, the state government also proposes to set up a medical college each in Patan and Valsad while the locations of the three others, for which provisions were made in the current year’s budget, would be decided soon, Vyas said. In addition, the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute had also proposed to set up a medical college in Ahmedabad, he said.

According to Vyas, two of the three colleges were granted permission earlier when Ketan Desai was the chairman of the MCI while a decision on the third was pending after the necessary inspections were carried out by the MCI team.

Following the arrest of Desai on graft charges, the MCI cancelled the previous permissions and put all the proposals for a fresh inspection by a new team which rejected the proposals.

It has only given the approval for the Adani Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhuj with a 150-seat capacity.

Placement fair gets off to top start at DA-IICT

The placement fair at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information & Communication Technology (DA-IICT) in Gandhinagar began only 10 days ago, but students are already in a mood to celebrate.

The reason: 25 per cent of students of the batch that will graduate next year have secured jobs. Moreover, this year’s top offer is almost double than last year’s best. In 2009, Rs 7.5 lakh was the highest salary per year offered to students. This time, the figure stands at Rs 14 lakh.

The institute’s placement process began on July 6, with companies falling in “niche group A” visiting its campus. “The first phase of the process has begun on a very bright note. Many companies have offered salaries ranging between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 14 lakh,” Asim Banerjee, faculty convener of the placement committee, told Mirror.

“We are confident that our students will perform well this year also.” He said that the placements at the institute were improving every year. So far, companies such as Accenture, Direct I, Kothari Infotech, Verse Innovation, Saba and Pramati Technologies have visited the campus and offered the profile of software developer to students.

Verse Innovations, which was the first company to visit DA-IICT, has recruited five students. Its top offer is Rs 6 lakh per annum. Pramati Technologies hires students mainly from IITs. This is the first time it has picked DA-IICT. The firm has recruited 14 students and the highest pay it has offered is Rs 5.36 lakh.

So far, Accenture has been the top recruiter; it has roped in 64 students. Direct I, an Indian MNC, has offered the best yearly pay of Rs 14 lakh.

Among other companies, Saba, a regular at DA-IICT, has taken on board seven students, with best pay of Rs 4 lakh. Kothari Infotech has hired one student with salary of Rs 5 lakh. The first phase of DA-IICT’s placement process is expected to continue till November.

Gujarat loses 2,000 seats in government engineering colleges

There is some bad news for students seeking admissions to engineering courses. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has disallowed admissions on the 1,400 seats in six public-private partnership (PPP) colleges.

The state government had decided to start PPP engineering colleges last year and filled up the seats as it expected AICTE approval to come through. However, AICTE realised that these seats were filled up without its approval and shot back a letter stating that since colleges in Vadnagar, Jamnagar, Navsari, Porbander, Amreli and Surendranagar were not approved last year, there was no question of granting them recognition.

Another 600 seats in Rajkot, Morbi and Surat were also in trouble for the same reason.

This has put the Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (Technical) in a dilemma as the last round for making changes in preferences given by students was July 9. Officials said that if the colleges were given approval at the eleventh hour, it would have delayed the entire admission procedure. The government has already initiated process of getting the seats back for this academic year itself.

Earlier, there was an increase of 6,230 in state colleges. In the nine new self finance college the total seats was 2,580 while the remaining 3,650 seats were in the existing colleges.

Director, technical education RB Pirzada said the government was in constant touch with AICTE officials to get the seats back and admit the students this year.

Clinical research boom in Gujarat spikes demand for trained personnel

With the clinical research industry in the state registering a robust growth in the last two-three years, clinical research students in the Gujarat have a reason to cheer.

The Institute of Clinical Research (India) Ahmedabad campus has been able to place 78 students of 2007-09 batch within the state this time. Of the total batch strength of 88 students, 10 did not opt for placements. R S Dugal, chairman of ICRI is optimistic about this growth rate sustaining in the years to come. He said, “At least 14-15 clinical research organisations(CROs) have come up in the state in the last three years, and many more Mumbai based CROs are looking at setting up sites in and around Ahmedabad. This has boosted the employment potential of the state manifold. Around 2000-3000 post graduate clinical research students would be required here now, and if we take into account the total number of doctors, chartered accountants, nurses, laboratory and other support stuff, the demand would rise to around 30,000-35,000 easily”, Dugal said.

At least 70-80 sites for clinical research have come up here recently and each site requires around 25-30 people, according to Dugal. Not only sites, Gujarat has recently seen a number of Central Laboratories set up by big ticket multinational firms. Synchron has set up a central laboratory here in Ahmedabad.

Even Baroda, Rajkot, Nadiad and Anand have come up as prominent clinical research destinations and sites for oncology, endocrinology and hypertension related research and trials.

Duggal added, “While currently there is a huge demand for trained manpower, the supply is poor. Also, we expect that there would be a surge in more data management and bio-statistics related work outsourcing. The state government is also serious now, and the Gujarat University is soon to start a clinical research course to address this demand surge”. The size of the clinical research industry in the state is around $100 million, Dugal said.

Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India launches new PG diploma course

Focusing specially on social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibilities, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) has announced a new postgraduate diploma in management for the development sector. The course has got approval from All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The first batch of the course will commence with 60 participants. “The course curriculum has been designed in such a manner that it will facilitate students to play the role of a manager, a trainer, a consultant in NGO. Students will also be trained to set up their own NGOs. For those students who want to gain further experience of the industry, the institute will offer placement services,” said the director of EDI, Dinesh Avasthi.

In the recent approvals given by AICTE, the institute also received an expansion permission for its flagship programme, postgraduate diploma in management business entrepreneurship. The intake capacity of the course has been increased from 60 to 120. The course has been designed for aspiring businessmen or people with family business. The objective is to promote entrepreneurship as a career option.

The programme offers dual specialisation in entrepreneurship areas of new enterprise creation, family business management, services management, agri-entrepreneurship, tourism entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education.

“Our teaching methods include action learning, business games, computer simulation, live projects, role plays, case-based teachings and field work and class-room teaching. “We have 35 permanent faculty members and with the new course commencing soon, we have six more faculty joining us,” said Sunil Shukla, chief faculty of EDI.

Graduates in any discipline are eligible to apply for the course. Scores of CAT, MAT and XAT examinations are also accepted.

NID collaborates with Coventry University UK

National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Coventry University, UK, during the recent visit of NID director Pradyuman Vyas.
The institutes will now collaborate in the fields of transportation and automobile design and product design disciplines. Coventry University is renowned institute for automotive design and automotive engineering.

Vyas was also awarded with an honorary Master of Arts (MA) degree by University of Creative Arts (UCA) in recognition of his contribution to design and education. He was awarded with the degree at UCA Farnham’s graduation ceremony on June 29 at Guildford Cathedral

PDPU students complete foreign internships

The first batch of students from Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) has completed its international internship. A total of 94 students did their summer internships in four universities of USA – University of Houston, University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

The program had been designed with three weeks of training to provide exposure of state-of-art technology in the upstream sector. “The students got exposure to foreign institutes, making them more competitive. Field trips were also part of their programme. The students got a chance to explore possible research and development program in their area of interest,” said Rinkal Bagadia of the institute
