Infosys on hiring spree as attrition climbs up

Infosys Technologies has stepped up hiring on robust growth in the second quarter (July-Sept) of this fiscal (2010-11) to make up for the rising attrition to meet the increasing demand of the resilient industry.

Though the IT bellwether added 14,264 new employees during the quarter under review (Q2), the exit of 6,618 of its techies resulted in net addition of 7,746, taking the total workforce to 122,468 till September 30.

On annualized and sequential basis, the attrition rate has shot up to 17.1 per cent from 10.9 per cent year ago and 15.8 per cent quarter ago.

Infosys board member and head of HRD and education and research T V Mohandas Pai, however, claimed in a statement that attrition had decreased from first quarter (April-June) when 8,859 employees were hired and 7,833 left, resulting in net addition of 1,026.

“We have seen record hiring this (second) quarter and attrition has decreased,” Pai said.

According to the company’s fact sheet, as against the present total strength of 122,468, the total number at the end of first quarter was 114,822 and year ago 105,453, with the net addition of 7,646, 1,026 and 1,548.

“Our new career architecture is showing positive results,” Pai added.

In Karjan, students already work on Linux System

Gujarat government is gearing up to use Linux operating system in schools in the state, but a city-based foundation has been teaching use of this system to students in Karjan for the last one year now. Schools in this block of Vadodara district were given computers with Linux by the state government, but they did not have teachers acquainted with it. That’s when Cosmo Foundation (CF) extended a helping hand by providing teachers as well as teaching materials to schools in Karjan block.

Presently, the foundation is working with six schools in Karjan to help students gain expertise in using Linux. They plan to extend the help to other schools in the block.

“We were working in the block for the last two years with the aim to strengthen education in government grant-in-aid schools. When state government donated computers and Linux system to schools in Karjan in September most of the schools could not make use of it as they did not have computer teachers,” said programme co-ordinator Mamta Baxi from CF.

CF worked to create a talent pool of teachers by training youngsters, who were conversant with computers. This was done to provide employment at local level instead of hiring others. “We also designed the curriculum, text books and educational material which could be used to teach students to operate Linux. On regular intervals, we also invite external experts to conduct special sessions with students,” added Baxi.

To maintain quality of teaching, CF ensures that teachers maintain a logbook recording the portion covered by them in class. “Even students along with external expert assess the teachers to detect loopholes in teaching. Along with computer literacy, the foundation also helps students to gain fluency in English and Gujarati languages,” Baxi said.

In fact, the computer literacy programme has brought in a positive trend in the block. The rate of absenteeism is reducing and literacy rate is up. “Two years ago, most of the students had not heard of or had ever touched computers. Now, these students can work on Linux and Microsoft systems. Computer literacy has made them confident and turned them into enthusiastic learners,” said the co-ordinator.

Gujarat has potential to be gateway for medical tourism in India

Gujarat has potential to become the gateway for medical tourism in India with the kind of capacity building being lined up for the state’s health care sector, state minister for health and tourism said in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Last year 4.50 lakh tourists visited the state for obtaining medical care.

With the kind of capacity building lined up for health care sector here in coming days we expect Gujarat to surpass Singapore in medical tourism,” State Minister of Health and Tourism Jaynarayan Vyas said at a FICCI organised seminar in Ahmedabad.

“The total health care market in India is projected to be at Rs 3,200 billion by 2012, and on conservative estimate even if Gujarat gets ten per cent share in it, it will throw open huge opportunities,” he said.

“The state can await for this kind of market opportunity in health care between 2012-2015,” Vyas said.

The way medical and paramedical colleges are proposed to come up in the state no doubt Gujarat will emerge as a leading health care tourism destination in coming days.

“Efforts are underway to upgrade facilities and get National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) certification for the state run hospitals,” Vyas said.

“By 2012 the health care industry in India is expected to reach 75 billion USD,” FICCI State Council Chairman Pankaj Patel who is also chairman of Zydus Cadila group said.

Clinical research boom in Gujarat spikes demand for trained personnel

With the clinical research industry in the state registering a robust growth in the last two-three years, clinical research students in the Gujarat have a reason to cheer.

The Institute of Clinical Research (India) Ahmedabad campus has been able to place 78 students of 2007-09 batch within the state this time. Of the total batch strength of 88 students, 10 did not opt for placements. R S Dugal, chairman of ICRI is optimistic about this growth rate sustaining in the years to come. He said, “At least 14-15 clinical research organisations(CROs) have come up in the state in the last three years, and many more Mumbai based CROs are looking at setting up sites in and around Ahmedabad. This has boosted the employment potential of the state manifold. Around 2000-3000 post graduate clinical research students would be required here now, and if we take into account the total number of doctors, chartered accountants, nurses, laboratory and other support stuff, the demand would rise to around 30,000-35,000 easily”, Dugal said.

At least 70-80 sites for clinical research have come up here recently and each site requires around 25-30 people, according to Dugal. Not only sites, Gujarat has recently seen a number of Central Laboratories set up by big ticket multinational firms. Synchron has set up a central laboratory here in Ahmedabad.

Even Baroda, Rajkot, Nadiad and Anand have come up as prominent clinical research destinations and sites for oncology, endocrinology and hypertension related research and trials.

Duggal added, “While currently there is a huge demand for trained manpower, the supply is poor. Also, we expect that there would be a surge in more data management and bio-statistics related work outsourcing. The state government is also serious now, and the Gujarat University is soon to start a clinical research course to address this demand surge”. The size of the clinical research industry in the state is around $100 million, Dugal said.

Tata Power plans India’s largest solar PV installation in gujarat

According to report published in Business Standard, India’s Tata Power has decided to set up 50 Mw solar photovoltaic power project at Mithapur in Gujarat where company already has its chemical plant. This will be the largest single solar photovoltaic installation in India according to company’s website.

BS reports says there are plans afoot to also set up 5 Mw geothermal project in Gujarat. In order to build expertise and capabilities in the area of geothermal, the company has invested $50 million for a 10 per cent stake in Australian company Geodynamics.

Gujarat has given a major thrust on power generation from solar energy. Last year the state government had allocated 716 Mw of solar power capacity to 34 national and international project developers. Many companies have already announced their intention to put up solar power project in Gujarat.

Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), a programme of US based William J Clinton Foundation, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gujarat government for setting up five solar parks in Gujarat with a cumulative power generation capacity of 3000 Mw.

National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) has entered into an agreement with state-run Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL) for putting up renewable energy power projects of 500 Mw including 100 Mw of solar power plant. Initially, the public sector company will establish 50 Mw solar power unit at Morwada in Banaskantha district with an investment of Rs 500 crore. Adani Power is also looking at 100 Mw solar power projects in the state.

Azure Power is yet another company which is setting up 15 Mw plant at Dahegam near Gandhinagar and the investment would be around Rs 255 crore.

Recently, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) has inked power purchase agreement (PPAs) with 28 companies for 420 Mw solar power.

BBA, BCA & BCom admissions to begin on June 5 in Gujarat

The admission procedure for 15,000 BCom seats in the state will begin in the first week of June. As many as 65 commerce colleges in the state are affiliated to Gujarat University.

Those seeking admission to GU-affiliated BCom colleges can obtain forms from and submit the same to the respective colleges between June 5 and 9. The first, second and third merit list will be announced on June 10, June 15 and June 18 respectively, said university sources.

The first, second and third merit list of candidates seeking admission under reservation quota will be declared on June 21, 24 and 26. If the quota seats remains vacant, they will be converted to open category seats.

The centralised admission process for 2,500 BBA and BCA seats will begin on June 1. GU has scrapped NRI and management quota seats in these colleges. Arts colleges will begin admission process on June 1.

Gujarat’s first IT SEZ clicks as Kendle logs on to Mindspace

IBM team explores SEZ for 5,000 employees unit

Gujarat’s first special economic zone for IT/ITES services is all set to kick start next month. US based Kendle group, a leading global clinical research organization (CRO) with about $ 415 million net revenues in 2009, has firmed up its plans to check into Mindspace, a Rs 1200 crore IT/ITES SEZ project developed by Mumbai-based K Raheja Corp on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor.

The developer has also held some initial talks with IBM as a five member team led by Amanda Garland, director, global strategy, IBM, visited the state and the SEZ on an exploratory basis on Wednesday, said government sources close to the development.

K Raheja Corp has been allotted about 93 acres of government land of which 68 acres is notified for SEZ while 25 acres is for supporting activities. The developer plans to set up about 15 buildings comprising about 10-15 million sq ft of space for IT/ITES.

“IBM is expanding its operations and it is scouting for 4.5-5 lakh sq ft space that can accommodate about 5,000 employees. For this the company is exploring three countries including Mexico and South Africa. In India, IBM is exploring opportunities in Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The team has given a very positive impression of the state,” sources said.

IBM already has a presence in Raheja’s IT park in Hyderabad and the developer has a good track record with as many as 14 IT parks to its credit, the official added.

When contacted a senior official of K Raheja Corp declined to comment.

A senior government official close to the development meanwhile confirmed that they had given the necessary clearances to Kendle for setting up operations in Mindspace.

Kendle, a Nasdaq listed CRO, said in a recent filing on March 3 that it has received approval from Indian authorities to proceed with development of new operations center in a SEZ in the upcoming Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor.

The new unit is expected to be operational by mid April, it said.

“Continued expansion throughout the Asia/Pacific region is crucial to the future growth of Kendle. The new SEZ operations center will be ideally suited to deliver best-in-class services to our customers seeking high-quality, innovative and cost-effective solutions for their clinical development needs,” said Stephen Cutler, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

By 2012, analysts project that more than 65 percent of all FDA-regulated trials will take place outside the United States, according to Kendle. This is reflected in the Indian biotechnology market, which is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 30 percent, and the Indian CRO market, which is expected to see growth of 49 percent annually, according to the company.

Kendle’s SEZ operations center initially will house approximately 50 associates and is expected to scale up to approximately 300 associates in the near term.

Having missed the IT/ITES bus in the past, about 15-16 IT/ITES SEZs have been approved in Gujarat state in the last three years or so. While some players like DLF have scrapped their SEZ status, others like Vascon Engineering have said in the past that their projects have been put on hold. The state government is also in the process of taking back the land it had allotted for Satyam’s IT park in Gandhinagar. About three months ago, Ganesh Housing Corporation Ltd has sought extension of the validity period of formal approval beyond December 19, 2009 for its IT SEZ near Chharodi near Ahmedabad.

Google India targets Gujarat SMBs for online advertising campaign!

Google India is eying small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Gujarat for its online advertisement programme AdWords by the end of this year, the company’s online sales head, Sridhar Seshadri, said.

“Gujarat with over 7,000 SMBs is the hub of entrepreneurship in the country and has tremendous potential of online advertising,” Seshadri said while announcing Google India’s new service called ‘JumpStart’ for the state.

Under this service Google will offer free expert support to SMBs to build an online advertising campaign to attract new customers.

“This service was first tried out on a pilot basis in Chandigarh and, based on the results, we are extending this initiative to empower more SMBs,” Seshadri said.

Google India wants to reach out to 70-80% of the SMBs in Gujarat in the next one year to get them to advertise online using AdWords, he said.

Seshadri said that for this, Google is planing a number of workshops with the SMBs. “Google’s AdWords programme provides a cost-effective platform to SMBs who can start advertising online with low budgets and grow as per their business demands,” he said.

SMBs constitute 80% of business enterprises which often face advertising challenges owing to the high costs involved, he said.

He also said that Google AdWords enables SMBs to target precisely, pay only for results, and stay firmly in charge of costs.

According to him, there are about 15,000 enterprises which are currently using AdWords for online advertising, of which about 20% are from Gujarat.

Seshadri said Google’s focus would be primarily on export units, those providing financial services, and manufacturing and ancillary units.

About JumpStart, he said it will provide a quick and easy way to SMBs to get their Google advertising campaign off to a successful start.

China systematically killing Indian manufacturing: L&T

Private sector engineering major Larsen & Toubro has said that China is systematically killing Indian manufacturing sector and sought 25 per cent anti-dumping duty on Chinese goods.

“China has a fixed currency. It is not a market economy like ours. China is systematically killing the Indian manufacturing sector,” L&T chief Naik, who was here for foundation stone laying ceremony of a forgings unit at Hazira told reporters here yesterday.

“There are taxes on goods manufactured locally, but none on imported products (from China). This is an unfair situation for Indian goods. This is why there should be 25 per cent anti-dumping duty on Chinese products,” Naik said.

Speaking specifically about power equipment sector, in which L&T is a major player, Naik said, “The Indian power companies, especially those in the private sector, have placed huge orders for power plant equipment with China. We can say that Chinese power sector is virtually working for India.”

“It is not good that 80 per cent of our dependence for power plant equipment is on one country, and that too China,” he said, adding that China should not be allowed to grow at the cost of Indian companies.

“The day China opens its economy, its prices are bound to go up by 25 per cent,” he said. “But unfortunately we are not taking any steps to stop it,” Naik further said.

L&T’s special steel manufacturing and ultra heavy forgings unit at Hazira is a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), in which L&T holds 74 per cent stake while the latter 26 per cent.

The plant is being set up at an investment of Rs 1,750 crore, and will supply finished forgings for nuclear reactors, pressurisers and steam generators, besides heavy forgings for critical equipment in the hydrocarbon sector, as well as thermal power plants and steel plants. The unit is expected to begin operations between March and May next year.

L&T is also investing over Rs 5,000 crore for setting up facilities to manufacture boilers, turbines, modular fabrications. It is also establishing a ship-building unit and a power plant at its Hazira facility.

“The boiler shop will be opened in March or April this year, which will be followed by the turbine shop in August or so,” Naik said.
