Eligibility test must for primary teachers in Gujarat

Now, even candidates seeking a teacher’s jobin class I to VII will have to clear the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET). The state education department has made this test mandatory for those teaching in primary schools from June 2011.

The education department recently issued a circular stating that all candidates applying for jobs in primary schools to teach in class I-VIII will have to appear for the TET and score minimum 60% marks in the test.

Minimum 60% marks required in TET
Test will included Logic, Aptitude, General Knowledge and Teaching attitude.
Test Score will be valid till 5 years
Candidate can take as many as tests
Apart from score in the test, marks scored by candidates in HSC, graduation, post-graduation, BEd courses will also be considered to make the final merit list while recruiting teachers in primary schools.
Test is compulsory for all kind of schools

Education department officials that the introduction of TET is in lines with the department’s initiative to improve the over-all standard of education. Recently, TET was made compulsory for candidates seeking jobs in secondary and higher secondary schools from June 2011. This exam will be conducted by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).

L&T, Mitsubishi Heavy JV inaugurate facilities in Hazira

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Ltd in joint venture (JV) with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has inaugurated the country’s first private sector facilities for the manufacture of supercritical boilers and turbine generators in Hazira, Surat.

Supercritical technology for coal-fired power plants is globally recognised as one of the most eco-friendly solutions to power generation. The technology ensures higher fuel efficiency leading to higher plant efficiency. Carbon emissions are reduced by as much as 5%. The L&T-MHI facilities are among the largest of their kind in the world, with a present annual capacity of manufacturing 5,000MW of equipment, to be expanded to 6,000MW by 2012.

Adani Power synchronises 4th unit at Mundra

Adani Power Limited. (APL), a power business arm of Adani Group on Friday announced the successful synchronization of its fourth unit of 330 megawatt (Mw) at Mundra in Kutch district of Gujarat.

With synchronization of this unit Adani Power completes commissioning of all 330 Mw units at Mundra and has achieved total generation capacity of 1320 Mw of coal fired thermal power generation, the company said in an official communique.

“I am pleased with the progress made by our project implementation and commissioning team, we are expecting that the first 660 Mw super critical unit too will be in operation in next couple of months and the subsequent units in rapid succession,” said Gautam Adani, chairman Adani Group in the release.

APL is setting up 4620 Mw coal fired power plant at Mundra, consisting of four units of 330 Mw and five units of 660 Mw, the 660 Mw units are based on energy efficient and environment friendly super critical technology. The financial closure of the entire 4620 Mw project at Mundra has already been achieved.

The company has made arrangements for evacuating power from the Mundra power station by laying 400 kV Mundra to Dehgam transmission line in Gujarat covering 430 km length and 500 kV HVDC line from Mundra to Mohindergarh covering 1,000 km length.

Don’t look at IT industry as means to settle abroad: N R Narayana Murthy

Youngsters looking to settle abroad, especially the US, courtesy IT industry should opt for career growth within India which offers larger growth opportunities than anywhere else in the world, Infosys mentor N R Narayana Murthy said on Tuesday.
“Somehow our youngsters have all assumed the idea of joining this industry is to go to US, get there, get an H1B, convert it into green card and settle down there. I think it is a wrong solution, a wrong strategy,” he said while addressing a summit here.

Murthy said one expects youngsters to get good salaries and good disposal of income in India, for which they have to get good quality jobs here. “But their objective cannot be to go and settle down in some other country, especially the US.”

“This time you have a great opportunity to consolidate and by working in India, by becoming a good quality professional you will sustain the advantage we have created and will make growth in India a permanent rather than a temporary feature.”

Gujarat BSNL to set up 50 towers in Vadodara for Wi-Max service

Gujarat Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has initiated work to set up 50 towers to launch Wi-Max service in the city, General Manager of the company Ramakant Sharma said here today. He did not give any time-frame as to when the Wi-Max service would start but informed the company has started a survey to put up 50 towers. Talking to PTI after releasing Vadodara telecom directory with Indiacom Yellow Pages-2010 at a function, Sharma said that BSNL Vadodara has launched GSM based 3G services which has been highly popular. GESIA set to expand operations in Gujarat

Having already attracted over 250 IT companies from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the Gujarat Electronics & Software Industries Association (GESIA) now intends to expand its operations in the state.

According to Jaimin Shah, the newly elected president of GESIA and founder director, Dev Information Technology Pvt. Ltd., the association intends to begin operations in other cities like Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot.

“We are growing positively in Gujarat but we need to constantly change our strategies. And in order to attract more IT companies from other areas of Gujarat, we are expanding GESIA by starting a Vadodara chapter. Once set up, we will follow up with more number of chapters in other cities like Surat and Rajkot,” said Shah.

Apart from expanding by opening more number of chapters, GESIA is also taking steps to attract IT companies from outside Gujarat. “We will also meet IT players that are not in Gujarat and invite them to the state. We hope to attract some of them in the near future,” said Shah.

Having pegged IT exports worth Rs 800-900 crore, GESIA is expecting an average growth of 20 per cent for the financial year 2010-11.

In addition to that, the association is also intending to go global. Recently, GESIA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ICT Davao Inc of Philippines for sending delegations to assist in trade fairs and buyer-seller meets, organize and participate in seminars and provide advisory support for projects.

The association also hosted a delegation of IT buyers from Asean countries like Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippines, among others.

On the domestic front, GESIA is also working on robust curriculum in technical institutes and colleges.

Shah, who recently took the mantle from his predecessor Nirav Shah, said, “We will be engaging with technical institutes, colleges and students to promote new areas and opportunities in IT sector in Gujarat. There is a growing need to generate employable manpower in the industry and such collaboration is one of the steps to meet it.”

BSNL launches 3G services in Vadodara

After launching 3G services in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched the 3G GSM mobile services in the city on Wednesday.

The telecom service provider has promised to cover 58 cities and towns across Gujarat by September. “Our plan is to capture the entire Gujarat market before any private operator enters the market with 3G service,” chief general manager of BSNL’s Gujarat circle Satya Pal said while launching the service for Vadodara urban here. “In Rajkot, services will be launched on July 25 whereas in Surat 3G services will be launched by end of this month or beginning of next month. We expect to start offering 3G services in all major cities of the state by August-end.”

“In Ahmedabad, we have received very good response as 8,000 customers have been added after the launch,” said Pal, adding that nearly Rs 400 crore are being spent on infrastructure to launch the services in the state. “We expect three lakh customers to avail these services by March-end. At the same time, we expect Rs 50 crore additional revenue through this services.”

The telecom service provider is expecting its revenue to reach Rs 1,800 crore from present Rs 1,600 crore in Gujarat circle. “We expect nearly 10 per cent of our existing 2G customers to migrate to 3G in a year,” said Pal, adding that BSNL in next two years is also expecting to cover all village panchayats of the state as part of the e-governance project. “We are spending Rs 2,000 crore only to lay optical fibre to connect all this panchayats in the state,” he said.

Principal general manager of BSNL’s Vadodara circle Ramakant Sharma added that BSNL Vadodara will launch fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in urban area within a month. Built on gigabyte passive optical technology (GPON), BSNL has been promoting FTTH as a revolutionary concept that will allow high-speed broadband access, enabling downloads of basic internet access service, video and audio on demand, IPTV and virtual classrooms among others.

SGCCI to set up centre for young entrepreneurs

A rapidly developing city needs skilled and qualified manpower to sustain its growth. It is important for a city to grow on multiple streams as a couple of industries alone cannot ensure high percentage growth for long.

The diamond city of Surat mostly relies on its diamond polishing and textile industries for its progress. The youth here, with good qualifications, have very few options. A need is felt here for a city centric centre to help an entrepreneur widen his/her horizon.

“We have a plan to develop a Centre for Entrepreneur Development (CED) in near future,” president, South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), Ajoy Bhattacharya, said.

“Our first draft on CED is ready and it will be finalised in a few days. We strongly feel the younger generation needs guidance.”

The CED will be based in Trade Centre in the city. It will have a complete data bank to help the budding talents with project reports etc. It will also help them to get finance and to fulfill government requirements.

“We will approach the state and central governments for assistance to build CED,” Bhattacharya said.

South Gujarat region, including Surat, offers tremendous opportunities to entrepreneurs in areas like environment, food processing, hospitality sector etc. Qualified youngsters, if given proper perspective of the scope of development of the city and the region, will transform themselves into highly successful entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

“We plan to guide the city youth towards the vast horizon available to them,” said Bhattacharya adding, “Our aim is to produce at least half-a-dozen success stories in a year’s time.”
