India as a global brand at IIM-A’s ConneXion in Ahmedabad
Students of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) got a good opportunity to network with industry during its annual business summit, ConneXion. The two-day summit, organised by the students of the one-year Post Graduate Program in Management for Executives (PGPX) at IIM-A brought together industry and academia to exchange views on several current issues.
The second day of the summit on Saturday comprised two panel sessions. While the first session discussed how India can be established as a global brand. The discussions were around what should be India’s branding-whether it should be branded as a low cost destination or as a sustainable destination for innovative designs.

Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad students launch start-up to sell fireworks online in Ahmedabad
Busy Amdavadis can avoid the hassle of going to the market to buy crackers, this Diwali. For, a start-up offers the option of buying firecrackers with the click of a mouse.
Two final year students of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) have launched a website, which offers branded firecrackers on sale. The portal will procure fireworks from a factory in Sivakasi and deliver the order to people in Ahmedabad within two days of the order.
“We hit upon this idea while discussing Diwali and how it was getting increasingly difficult to arrange for all the celebrations with today’s hectic lifestyle. This is an area which is not serviced by a lot of companies. We are ramping up promotion for the portal on social media websites and setting up a creating a logistics team in Ahmedabad as Diwali approaches,” said Arshdeep Kaur, who started the venture with Kunal Gupta.
The students were inspired by their alumni who are successful entrepreneurs. “The IIM-A programme helped in multiple ways, not just in terms of course content but the overall experience. We launched this platform with the help and experience of IIM-A alumnus Manu Midha, who himself co-founded an online retail venture,” said Kaur. More »
IIT, Gandhinagar director elected President of IAEE in Ahmedabd
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) Director, Dr Sudhir K Jain, has been recently elected as the President of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE). After serving the Board of Directors of IAEE as a President Elect for the next two years, Dr Jain will take over as the President of IAEE in 2014 and serve as President for the next four years.
IAEE is an international organisation whose membership consists of earthquake engineering associations/societies of 56 countries in the world. IAEE leads the efforts on research, policies, regulations, education related to earthquake engineering around the world through various forums, e.g., journals, world conferences, international meetings, workshops, etc and provides global interface to local societies of different countries. Ahmedabad students to make ‘space call’ to Sunita Williams in Ahmedabad
Amid Diwali fireworks, a group of students in Gujarat will reach out to the stars. For the first time in India, about 500 students will have a live chat with Sunita Williams, theIndian-origin astronaut aboard International Space Station, through Ham radio set-up atScience City in Ahmedabad.
“We have got a go-ahead from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) to organise the talk between November 12 and 16. We are trying to hold the event on November 14, celebrated as Children’s Day in India. It is a great opportunity for the students as they would be talking to Williams in space. As she has roots in Gujarat, it is all the more special for us,” said Ravi Saxena, additional chief secretary, department of science and technology. The scientific community from the state contacted Nasa soon after Williams set off for her record-breaking journey in July this year. More »
Students of textile chemistry at M S University get scholarships from Chennai-based company in vadodara
Seven students of the department of textile chemistry of the M S University have been offered scholarships by a Chennai-based textile manufacturing company.
The decision of offering scholarships to the students was made in a meeting held a few months back between head of the department D P Chattopadhyay and regional manager of Messers Harris and Menuk that has offered the scholarship, Hitendra Vayeda.
It is for the first time in the history of the department that any company has offered scholarship to students on the basis of their results and financial conditions. Students from third year and second year diploma courses of the department were selected as candidates of the scholarship.
A university release stated that the company is keen on offering scholarships in the future too to the distinguished students of the department. The number of students who will receive the scholarship and the amount of scholarship is also likely to increase in the coming years. More »
First phase of digital university framework successful: M S University in Vadodara
M S University on Wednesday said that it has been able to successfully complete the first phase of digital university framework. According to the university, the first batch of first year students have availed the online services from the university without any disruptions.
From the current academic year, MSU has taken the initiative to maintain a complete ‘student life cycle’ to allow students experience the digital university framework.
“The digital university framework has now completed the first phase of registrations of the first year students of different undergraduate and postgraduate courses and generated and supplied user id and password to all the registered students. The system has automatically generated sms relating to the user id and password to those students who are enrolled,” officer on special duty (registrar) Dr Amit Dholakia told TOI.

Gujarat Pipavav Port raises Rs.350 crore
Gujarat Pipavav Port, on Monday, said it had raised Rs.350 crore through a mix of qualified institutional placement (QIP) and preferential issue of shares.
The infusion will be used for repayment of the existing loans which will enable it to tie up funds for its Rs.1,097-crore expansion, the company said in a statement.
The company raised Rs.199.48 crore through QIP of 3.41 crore shares to a clutch of investors such as Bajaj Life Insurance, SBI Life Insurance, Franklin Templeton, Kotak Mahindra, Vanguard International Explorer Fund, Schroder Asia Pacific Fund and Jardine Fleming, the statement said. More »
L&T commissions switchgear making unit in Vadodra
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) inaugurated its manufacturing facility for switchgear products at Vadodara. Newly built facility, on 27,000 sq meter, will manufacture air circuit breakers (ACBs) and moulded case circuit breakers (MCCBs).
This is a capacity expansion initiative for the business of L&T’s Electrical & Automation (E&A), leaders in low voltage switchgear in India, read media statement issued by L&T. The facility houses modules for the assembly lines for circuit breakers ACBs and MCCBs – along with the shops for press working, moulding and tooling

Gujarat, Germany to set up business centre
A German Indian business centre (GIBC) has been proposed in the state to facilitate business opportunities between Germany and Gujarat for setting up of offices, technology transfers and joint ventures.
The centre will facilitate investment between companies in Germany and Gujarat. Among other activities, GIBC will facilitate acquisition of German companies for Gujarat companies along with taking care of due diligence. The centre will also scout for and register technology partners in both countries. More »
International coach builders queue up for Metro ahmedabad
Engineering majors from Japan, France, China, Germany and Austria are in the race to build coaches for the proposed Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail.
Eight global giants like France’s Alstom, Construcciones Y Auxiliar De Ferrocarriles, Bombardier India, Austria’s Siemens and Korea’s Hyundai Rotem are among others that have evinced interest in the Rs 15,000-crore project, being executed by a special purpose vehicle, Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad Company Limited (MEGA).

Now, even candidates seeking a teacher’s jobin class I to VII will have to clear the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET). The state education department has made this test mandatory for those teaching in primary schools from June 2011.
The education department recently issued a circular stating that all candidates applying for jobs in primary schools to teach in class I-VIII will have to appear for the TET and score minimum 60% marks in the test.
