HC notice to govt over TET for not including Socail Studies

The Gujarat high court on Tuesday issued notice to the state government asking them to explain why social science subject is not included in the teachers’ eligibility test (TET), which is mandatory before recruitment of primary teachers and vidhya sahayaks. National Council for Teachers’ Education (NCTE) last year made it mandatory for all aspiring primary teachers to clear an entrance test. More »

Now, even candidates seeking a teacher’s jobin class I to VII will have to clear the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET). The state education department has made this test mandatory for those teaching in primary schools from June 2011.

The education department recently issued a circular stating that all candidates applying for jobs in primary schools to teach in class I-VIII will have to appear for the TET and score minimum 60% marks in the test.

Performance appraisal for college teachers

The recent, hefty pay hike for college teachers in the state has come with a price tag – accountability. The state has issued a government resolution to ensure that college teachers’ performances are appraised on an annual basis from now on.

The appraisal, said state education department sources, will be in keeping with certain academic performance indicators. The indicators, sources said, will gauge the teachers’ involvement throu-gh the number of research papers drawn up, books read for capacity building, work load, number of lectures taken, seminars conducted and co-curricular activities. Gujarat government hires 50,000 youths this year

Gujarat government has hired 50,000 employees in 2011. With this, the number of government employees has risen to 5,16,936 from 4,83,118 in 2010. Another 20,000 youths are expected to be hired by 2012.

Maximum jobs were created in the home department. The second highest is water supply department. As many as 12,069 youths were recruited in the police department. However, there was no vacancy in education department. The sachivalaya and legislative department hired no one.

The government has focused on five departments: Petroleum, climate change, urban, woman and child, as well as science and technology. There are only 16 people working in climate change department and 40  in science and technology department.
