CEPT University placements:GIFT shortlists six students on First day

Day one of CEPT University placements began on a promising note with Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT) shortlisting six students from various faculties. A Rs 70,000-crore state-of-the-art project, GIFT that has put its work on a fast track has selected students from Urban Transport, Infrastructure Planning, Landscape and Urban Designing. Other recruiters have kept two candidates in waiting list.

The placement that began on Wednesday will continue till February 10. Confirming the news, a highly-placed source in CEPT said, “GIFT has shortlisted our six students. The company is yet to decide if they want more candidates.” As many as 30 firms, including MNCs such as CRISIL, ATTKINS GLobal, Egies, Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL), ICRA-IMaCs, Liases, Unity Infrastructure, Water Sanitation Performance Assessment (PAS), have been participating in the placement process.

“JLL and ACP Design have planned to visit the campus on February 3. Swedish firm Liases will come calling on February 4,” said the source.

On-line recruitment
The university has set up an on-line recruitment system for the companies that have shown interest in the placement. The university has specially developed the system following the demand of firms that wanted to conduct recruitment interviews on-line to save time and other resources.

Taking the advantage of the newly introduced system, ATTKINS GLobal has decided to conduct an online test for candidates on February 5. After the test, the company officials will visit the campus for further rounds of test.

Special session
CEPT has conducted a special session for its students and advised them to not take decision in a hurry. This is aimed at reducing attrition ratio. Students have been given time to decide if they want to join the firm. The appointment letters will be given only once students make their mind to join.

Infosys Founder Narayana Murthy graces first AU convocation

Addressing the students of Ahmedabad University (AU), chairman and chief mentor of Infosys N R Narayana Murthy said that the development in the country is disproportionate. Murthy urged the graduating students to shoulder the responsibility of bringing an inclusive and equitable change in the country.

Murthy was the chief guest at the first convocation of Ahmedabad University, which was held at its campus on Monday. The event conferred degrees to the university’s first batch of 110 MBA and 8 BBA students that graduated this year.

Talking to the students, Murthy said that it is their responsibility to bring inclusive and equitable change in the country because excellence in education is a rarity in the country and students like them who have had the privilege of getting such kind of education must take up the responsibility of bringing a change in this country. “You are the few blessed ones in such a paradoxical India,” said Murthy.

Pointing out the disparity in the country’s growth, Murthy said that while the country is considered to be a strategic global economic power and is an important voice in global matters, Indians are still far from achieving the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabbhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru. He further said, “We are still very far away from creating an India where every Indian will be provided with the wherewithal to develop and rise to their fullest stature, and where poverty, ill-health and ignorance will have vanished.”

“In a nation of 1.2 billion people, only 65% of the people are literate. Around 420 million people live in eight states alone. Around 350 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and another 250 million people do not have access to basic medical care and 700 million people do not have decent sanitation facilities.”

The event also saw the presence of chancellor of AU Sanjay Lalbhai, chairman of board of management of AU Prafull Anubhai, provost of AU AH Kalro and registrar of the university BM Shah.

AMTS Bus Schedule & Station info on Google Map soon

Has the hassle of knowing the right bus number to your destination stopped you from boarding an AMTS bus? Well, now the information is just a mouse click away. AMTS route information, complete with bus numbers, will now be available on Google Maps.

Google India on Tuesday announced about inclusion of AMTS bus services and DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) to Google Transit. The company has already made available details of Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune bus services on Google Maps.

“A team of two officials from a private company had visited Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation some six months back. The officials said that they wanted information about the AMTS routes which they will then provide to Google,” said M S Patel, transport manager, AMC.

AMC had provided the company officials with complete route map and details about the AMTS fleet. However, the corporation has yet not received any intimation from Google about inclusion of AMTS routes on Google Maps.

“We are yet to receive any official confirmation about AMTS bus route being available on Google Maps. But the move will be handy to thousands of commuters who come to Ahmedabad and not aware about directions to various places, especially those arriving at Kalupur railway station. We are hopeful with AMTS making its way on Google map, Ahmedabad BRTS routes will also be included soon,” said a senior AMC official.

While making the announcement, Google India said, “More people, in our metro cities, use local bus services to commute than any other transport network/medium. However, the availability and dissemination of route and schedule information of this service have tremendous scope for improvement.”
However, with the erratic schedules of AMTS buses, time will tell how helpful the information will be to Amdavadis.

Sardar Patel Statue of Unity to cost Rs 2,000 cr

It’s official. The proposed 182-metre high statue of Sardar Patel downstream of the Narmada dam will cost Rs 2,000 crore as against earlier estimates of Rs 1,000 crore.

The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) has invited expressions of interest from reputed consultants for the project. Already, state government officials are in talks with builders of Burj Khalifa – Samsung Construction & Technology (C&T) – to take up the project.

The state government proposes to rope in Gujarati diaspora, top business houses and general public to collect money for the project.

While officials in the SSNNL claimed money may not be a problem, a top aide of chief minister Narendra Modi said, “One has to take into account cost escalation while building such kind of a statue. It is possible that by the time the state government floats tenders, the cost of the project would have escalated to Rs 2,500 crore”.

The Gujarat government has collected Rs 55 crore for the high-profile project. Of this, Rs 50 crore has been collected from different state public sector undertakings, while Rs 5 crore has been contributed by Adani group. The PSUs have provided money from their corporate social responsibility funds.

Called Statue of Unity, to be built on Sadhu island which is about 3.5 km downstream of Narmada dam, the state government has formed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust to implement the project.

As per the official note, the consultant will be required to do overall area planning, including spaces for hospitality, health, education, convention and training centres, development and formulation of tourism plan and provide technical and managerial assistance for bids to invite EPC contract.

People can only download receipt for exam and ID card etc from Ojas.nic.in but this goverment is not up to date and seems many time down. Here is screen shot of site. Goverment should keep extra server so this kind of sites.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: 74 education MoUs signed

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 will begin on today January 12, but pre-event seminars like the International Round Table of Academic Institutions (IRAI) have already witnessed the signing of 74 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday.

Officials and academicians of Gujarat-based universities, industries and foreign universities and research institutes discussed and explored various areas of research at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar.

Nearly 33 delegates from 25 universities of 9 countries discussed the possibilities of research collaborations, students and faculty exchange programmes and curriculum development.

Officials from various foreign universities shared information on the facilities and expertise available in their institutes.

14 MoUs have been signed by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) with University of Oklahoma, Kansas University and GeoGlobal Research Institute, student and faculty exchange programme.
11 MoUs for curriculum development and visiting faculty with various industry bodies and business houses were also inked.
PDPU signed 12 MoUs with University of Western Ontario, University of Oklahoma, University of Sasktchewan, Texas A&M University and industries & institutes such as American Jewish Committee, Dahej SEZ, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd., Shell & Total, Shell Hazira, Tata Power, Jubiliant Oil & Gas, Institute of Seismological Research and Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute (GIDM).
Gujarat University did not sign a single MoU with a foreign institute or industry.
Bhavnagar University signed 10 MoUs with industries of the state.
Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat signed 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

However, details of most of the MoUs are yet to be discussed. “These MoUs have been signed on primary discussion and expressions of interests. However, the minute details will now have to be worked out. These are only MoUs for research activities and students and faculty exchange programmes. MoUs for investments in the education sector in the state would be signed on January 12 during the global summit,” the Gujarat state principal secretary said.

The state through its Knowledge Consortium of Gujaratsigned 9 MoUs with institutes like College of Environmental & Health Sciences, Tajen University, Karolinska Institute School of Public Affairs, Department of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angles (UCLA) among others.

Campus Placement 2010-11 @ DA-IICT Gandhinagar, Max 8.5 Lac Package Offered

Deloitte made 19 offers.
Two companies incubated at National Design Business Incubator of NID, Mediashala and Mayavi, visited the campus for the first time and recruited nine candidates. They offered a CTC of 4.2 lakh per annum.
The students were offered jobs as research engineer, software developer, business technology associate, analyst, application developer, system developer, and embedded system designer etc.
Other companies which also visited the campus were Deloitte, Saba Software, Airvana Networks, Fiserv, Anindus Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Kuliza, Capillary, Mu-Sigma, Mediashala, Evosys, Tata Technologies, Bit Mapper, Sankalp Semiconductors, Sapient, Dolcera, Robosoft, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, MindTree, Patni, Persistent and Accenture.

MTS eyes 30% CDMA market share in Gujarat

Having rolled out its prepaid CDMA mobile telephony services, MTS, in Gujarat, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) is now eyeing to grab a market share of 30 per cent in the state. Entering its 13th circle in the country, SSTL intends to build an MTS subscriber base of two lakhs for voice users and 6,000 data users by end of 2011.

““The launch of MTS services in Gujarat will provide mobile customers the access to our nationally successful half paisa per second tariff plan. In-addition to an unmatched tariff, our focus is also to provide a world class customer care service and add more value-for-money for customer through innovative products like Recharge Booster, where we give 25 per cent extra talk time with every subsequent recharge for a year. By 2011 end, we have a target of two lakh voice users and 6,000 data users. We are expecting a CDMA market share of 30 per cent in Gujarat,” said Navid Rashid, Chief Operating Officer, Gujarat.

SSTL’s launch plan, spread across 245 towns and 5,000 villages, includes an investment of Rs 100 crore in Gujarat. These funds will be utilised in building the service network for MTS customers across the circle. Over the next 3 months, MTS customers would also be serviced by a network of over 150 dealers and 31000 retail outlets across the state. Going forward, MTS also plans to launch its high speed mobile broadband service in Gujarat under its flagship data brand ‘MBlaze’ by first quarter of 2011.

CAPEX plans – Siemens plans INR 1200 investment in Gujarat

Having inaugurated the second phase of its steam turbine and compressor manufacturing facility at Vadodara, Siemens Ltd has chalked out INR 1,200 crore CAPEX plan for the next two years in the state of Gujarat.

While the company has already invested INR 275 crore of the amount for the second phase of turbine and compressor plant, the company has also planned to expand the existing unit, apart from setting up transformers and wind turbine manufacturing units in the region.

Mr AK Dixit CEO of energy sector Siemens Ltd said that “We had invested around INR 300 crore for the phase one of the plant where we began manufacturing small steam turbine with a capacity of 45 MW. At an investment of INR 275 crore, we have now launched the second phase wherein we will manufacture steam turbine with a capacity of 150 MW and compressors. Next stage of the plan is to expand and manufacture 250 MW steam turbines, transformers and renewable energy products like wind turbine. In all, we would be investing INR 1,200 crore in next two years in Gujarat including the current second phase expansion.”

As against the conventional gear drive technology used for manufacturing wind turbines, Siemens Ltd is planning to manufacture the same using direct drive technology and intends to set up a manufacturing unit in Gujarat. Mr Dixit added that “We will be investing INR 350 crore to INR 400 crore for the wind turbine unit which we would like to put up in Vadodara. The plant should be operational by 2013.”

The steam turbine and compressor factory has been operational in Vadodara since January 2007 and is already established as a ‘Centre of Competence’ for smaller steam turbines up to 45 MW for industrial applications. The smaller turbines up to 15 MW are sourced from this factory by Siemens AG to cater to Asia, Africa and even to European markets. The second phase of the factory will further enhance company’s manufacturing footprint in India. The expansion program is in line with the announcement made by Peter Loescher president and CEO of Siemens AG in February 2010 when he announced an investment of INR 1,600 crore in India over the next three years to set up six hubs of base level products.

Armin Bruck MD of Siemens Ltd that “The successful inauguration of our second phase of steam turbine and compressor facility has been made possible due to our strategy for localization. The order value for our oil and gas business in India for the financial year 2010 has seen a rise of 66 per cent as against the financial year 2009.”

Khel Mahakumbh: 73k Amdavadis to take part

The high voltage ‘Khel Mahakumbh’ was flagged off by mayor Asit Vora and municipal commissioner IP Gautam on Sunday morning from Navrangpura. The baton rally, which will visit every corner of the city, will invite citizens to the sporting competition.As many as 1,818 bikes carrying posters and banners of the event were flagged off. The event has already seen an official registration of 73,000 from Ahmedabad, according to AMC records. Nearly 1,800 officers would judge and act as arbitrators in the mega event which will continue until November 29. The event is aiming to achieve a participation of 16 lakh sportsmen in the state.

In Ahmedabad, there will be 24 venues for ward-level competitions. There are total of 16 sporting events. To start with on Monday volleyball, kho-kho, kabbadi and track and field events would be held. The event would last till 16 to 18 days.

The event will see Rs 23 crore worth of prizes to be distributed among winners in various events, according to state government officials. In each district, local MLAs have been asked to mobilize participation for the event. “We are focusing on just number of participants in various events. Special teams are visiting schools, colleges and even institutions to mobilize participants,” says a senior AMC official.
