4,600 to take entrance test for SPIPA

With more and more students seeking a spot in the civil services in Gujarat, this year a record 4,600 students will take an entrance test on Sunday for Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA), a coaching institute for civil services examination.

SPIPA has been coaching aspirants for civil services exams since 1972. “This year the number of aspirants for the 72 seats was the highest compared to past years. Gujarati youths have become more aware about the career options in the civil services and so there has been an increase in the number of students taking the entrance exam every year,” said J M Acharya, joint director SPIPA.

Besides the fact that the civil services were gaining popularity, the number of students clearing the exam was also increasing. This year six students from the state made it to the civil services. Students demand that SPIPA should increase its capacity to 250 students.

TET results out, only 27% clear language, 66.38% maths

The wait for candidates aspiring to become teachers in primary sections of schools is over, as results of the state-wide Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) were declared on Wednesday.

Total Teacher Vacancy : 13,000

Appeared in TET exam : 1,09,318

Passed in TET Exam : 33,565

Pass Percentage : 30.70%

Pass Percentage in Language : 27.57%

Pass in Language: 26,879

Pass in Maths & Science: 6686

This is the first time that the state education department has conducted a mandatory test for recruitment of teachers for primary section in schools (Class I-VIII). The poor result in the language section has come as a shock for most candidates as they reportedly found the paper simple.

According to the State Examination Board, it is not necessary that those who cleared the test are assured of a teaching job. The test is only one of the mandatory qualifications required for applying for the post of primary teacher in schools. “In case of many candidates applying for one post, preference will be given to meritorious candidates of TET. Their educational qualifications will also be considered,” added Solanki. The TET paper was for a maximum 150 marks and was divided into two parts of 75 marks each. A minimum of 90 out of 150 marks was required to clear the test.

1. Qualification:

Graduate B.A., B.Com. B.Sc., B.B.A., B.C.A., B.Sc(Agri) or graduation in any other discipline with 55% for General and 50% for SC, ST and SEBC candidates.
The knowledge of Computers and English language is required, which shall be assessed by the Company through pre-employment test.

2. Age limit :

( As on 22/06/2011): 25 years for General category and 30 years for SC, ST and SEBC category candidates. 9 institutions apply for university status from Gujarat

Nine institutions have applied to the state education department for being granted university status , government officials said. Last year, two institutions were granted the university status namely Auro University and Uka Talsania University. This year nine institutes that have applied are – Indus Technology, St Kabir, Charotar Arogya Mandal, Vardhman Charitable Trust, GH Raisoni National Institute, Institute of Technology and Management, Vadodara , and Shanti University.

A scrutiny committee of the education department met recently and discussed the applications. Main considerations during the discussion were financial health of these institutes. The committee gauged if these institutes could generate enough resources to provide quality infrastructure and education. The committee also discussed the pros and cons about giving university status to the institutions.

Proposed 48 lakh jobs, but created only 2.7 lakh by Vibrant Gujarat MoUs

MoUs signed in the four summits so far envisaged 47.95 lakh jobs, but official figures show only 2.7 lakh people have been employed in 8 years

There shouldn’t have been any unemployment in Gujarat if all the jobs proposed in the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during vibrant Gujarat summits were actually created.
A close look at government figures reveal that MoUs failed to generate the envisaged jobs as only 2.7 lakh people in the state landed jobs since 2003 when the first summit was hosted as against the proposed 47,95,095 employment opportunities.

The poor conversion rate of MoUs and hence generation of employment is reflected in the figures available with Directorate of Employment and Training at Gandhinagar. As many as 17,19,099 people were employed in the private and public sectors in 1995. The figure went up to 19,40,002, including 2.87 lakh women, in 2010. This translates into a rise of 220,903 jobs.

Incidentally, in 2003 when the first summit was organised, 16,30,896 people were in jobs in private and public sectors. By 2009 the figure went up to 19,04,000. “It means that only 2,73,104 jobs have been added since the first summit and all these jobs cannot be credited to the four summits,” said an official at the Directorate of Employment and Training.

“About 50,000 people were absorbed in the private sector in the last one year. Most of these employment opportunities were in service industry like mobile telephony and banking. Big industrial houses have failed to generate significant employment for the people in the state.

Campus Placement @ Nirma University, Max packageRs 8.4 L

The placement procedures are also in process at the Institute of Technology in Nirma University.
Almost 94 per cent of students from B Tech have received an offer while 98 per cent of students from CS, IT, & EC discipline were placed in first week of placements which began on December 4.
The highest salary package is Rs 8.43 lakh per annum offered to a B Tech student by Future First.
Companies like, Tata Technologies, L&T Group, Linde, Reliance, Tata Motors, Sankalp Semiconductors, Infosys, Cognizant, Accenture, CLP Power, National Instruments, Essar Group, Galaxy Surfactants, Jubilant Life Sciences, KEC International, Airvana Networks, Synopsys, Hewlett Packard, Caterpillar, Patni, GMMCO & BASF India, Futures First, Deloitte were among the recruiters.
Infosys being the major mass recruiter made 197 offers, Cognizant made 132 offers and Accenture made 50 offers to the students. Around 25 companies visited the campus with 30 more lined up.

Campus Placement 2010-11 @ DA-IICT Gandhinagar, Max 8.5 Lac Package Offered

Other companies which also visited the campus were Deloitte, Saba Software, Airvana Networks, Fiserv, Anindus Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Kuliza, Capillary, Mu-Sigma, Mediashala, Evosys, Tata Technologies, Bit Mapper, Sankalp Semiconductors, Sapient, Dolcera, Robosoft, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, MindTree, Patni, Persistent and Accenture.

Clinical research boom in Gujarat spikes demand for trained personnel

With the clinical research industry in the state registering a robust growth in the last two-three years, clinical research students in the Gujarat have a reason to cheer.

The Institute of Clinical Research (India) Ahmedabad campus has been able to place 78 students of 2007-09 batch within the state this time. Of the total batch strength of 88 students, 10 did not opt for placements. R S Dugal, chairman of ICRI is optimistic about this growth rate sustaining in the years to come. He said, “At least 14-15 clinical research organisations(CROs) have come up in the state in the last three years, and many more Mumbai based CROs are looking at setting up sites in and around Ahmedabad. This has boosted the employment potential of the state manifold. Around 2000-3000 post graduate clinical research students would be required here now, and if we take into account the total number of doctors, chartered accountants, nurses, laboratory and other support stuff, the demand would rise to around 30,000-35,000 easily”, Dugal said.

At least 70-80 sites for clinical research have come up here recently and each site requires around 25-30 people, according to Dugal. Not only sites, Gujarat has recently seen a number of Central Laboratories set up by big ticket multinational firms. Synchron has set up a central laboratory here in Ahmedabad.

Even Baroda, Rajkot, Nadiad and Anand have come up as prominent clinical research destinations and sites for oncology, endocrinology and hypertension related research and trials.

Duggal added, “While currently there is a huge demand for trained manpower, the supply is poor. Also, we expect that there would be a surge in more data management and bio-statistics related work outsourcing. The state government is also serious now, and the Gujarat University is soon to start a clinical research course to address this demand surge”. The size of the clinical research industry in the state is around $100 million, Dugal said.
