Bangalore School of Business shuts after taking fee in ahmedabad

Bangalore School of Business ‘shifted’ its 29 students to International Business School after charging them Rs 92,000 each. But IBS says the deal with BSB was about property, not admission of its students

An MBA institute that claims to be affiliated to Periyar University is winding up its operations in the city, leaving 29 students in the lurch. To make their exit from Ahmedabad smooth, the institute has ‘shifted’ its students — without their knowledge — to another institute.

Bangalore School of Business (BSB), which started in 2010, enrolled four students in its first batch. They even conducted internal exams on June 21.

A few weeks before it decided to shut shop, the institute took in 25 students for its second batch — scheduled to begin on July 19 — and collected Rs 92,000 for a semester.

Few days ago, the students of both batches received phone calls from an institute named International Business School (IBS) informing them that they will now be pursuing the Post Graduate Programme in Management from IBS instead of BSB.

The inside story, however, is this: BSB has sold its Ahmedabad property near Drive-In Cinema to IBS. While they are convincing students to pursue the course at IBS, authorities at IBS say their deal was only for the property, not the students. IBS, which claims to be affiliated to M S University in Chennai, is currently located at Satyam Mall in Satellite.

BSB has also “offered” to “shift” the students to their Bangalore and Delhi centres if they do not want to be with IBS. But neither of the two centres is aware of this.

“Is Ahmedabad centre is closing down? We have no idea about it,” said Usha, a staff member of the Bangalore centre. Ditto was the reaction from the BSB official at Delhi centre. “We have no information about Ahmedabad centre closing down,” said Anil Tomar.

NO PROOF OF AFFILIATION

Agitated and confused, students gathered at BSB institute on Wednesday demanding a refund of the fee paid. The authorities initially refused to pay up and behaved very rudely with them. But when an angry parent threatened to call cops, they said they’ll pay up in a day or two.

BSB authorities were not even ready to talk to this reporter initially when she went to the institute on Wednesday. They were busy packing computers and other equipment. When she managed to get into the cabin of the Associate Director Sunil Sachdev, this is what he told her: “We are closing down due to personal reasons. The new batch was about to begin on July 19. Since we did not find it convenient to inform our students about our decision to shut the center, we asked IBS to contact them.”

One of the agitating students, Naveed Khan, told Mirror he was denied education loan for the course at BSB because the institute had not mentioned in the prospectus and the admission form which university it was affiliated to.

When asked to show proof of affiliation to Periyar University, Sachdev said: “That is none of your concern. There is no rule that an institute should name the university it is affiliated to in the prospectus. We don’t need to show anybody any proof. We know we are affiliated to it.”

STUDENTS IN THE LURCH
Behraram Sem, a first year student of BSB, said: “I took my internal exam on June 21. At that time the authorities told us the classes will resume after summer vacation on July 19. But few days ago, I got a call from International Business School saying I am now part of their institute.”

He added: “When BSB started in 2010 they said there will be 30 students in a batch. But we were only five.”

Nimesh Bhatt, an official of IBS, which claims to be affiliated to MS University in Chennai said: “What BSB does with its students is entirely its problem. We have nothing to do with their internal matter. We are only interested in their property and are planning to shift there in a week.”

Most students of Periyar University-affiliated BSB don’t even know IBS is affiliated to M S University. Only one student named Sangram Singh knew about it. “There’s no point studying at IBS. I plan to shift to Delhi centre and continue the course there. BSB authorities asked me to do that and said they’ll take care of my food and accommodation. But nothing has been given to me in writing.”

Meanwhile, Sachdeva went on to tell this reporter: “I would have left the city by Thursday. I am not doing any crime. I am going back to my house at Bhadrapur in New Delhi.”

SHADY ENTERPRISE
Last year, over 120 students from Bangalore centre of BSB staged a protest in front of a police station after the college was derecognised by Madurai Kamaraj University. The college management tried assuring the students that they were affiliated to Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management University (EIILM), Sikkim. But an investigation by Bangalore Mirror found out the private ‘university’ was housed in a garage.  Two persons from BSB Bangalore were arrested in November last year.

There is no rule stating that an institute should name the university it is affiliated to in the prospectus. We don’t need to show anybody any proof.
