LikeSelf-financed colleges move court on fee revision
Challenging the directive of the executive council of Gujarat University (GU) to 16 self-financed colleges to maintain status quo in fee structure, the institutions filed a writ petition in the high court on Monday seeking revision in charges. The case will come up for hearing on Tuesday.
The petition filed by the self-financed colleges states that they have the right to revise fee structure because they do not offer professional courses.
Course Old fees Proposed fees Accepted fees
B.com 5,000 9000 7000
BBA 10,000 17,500 14,000
BCA 15,000 25,000 18,000
It also states that fee for B Com, BBA and BCA courses offered at these institutions were not hiked for the past nine years even as that for professional courses were revised several times.
The self-financed colleges had approached GU authorities seeking fee revision before the beginning of this academic session.
They had proposed to hike the annual fee of B Com to Rs 9,000 from Rs 5,500. For BBA, their proposed annual fee was Rs 17,500, in place of Rs 10,000. For BCA, they urged the varsity to raise the annual fee from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000.
Considering the proposal of the self-financed colleges sympathetically, GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi granted their authorities permission to revise fee on ad hoc basis.
He advised them to charge Rs 7,000 annual fee for B Com, Rs 14,000 for BBA and Rs 18,000 for BCA. The authorities of self-financed colleges charged students accordingly during admission in the new academic session.
Majority of the GU’s executive council members, however, expressed their reservation on revision of fee at self-financed colleges when they met on October 7.
Claiming that these institutions were making profit and lacked infrastructure, they directed them to follow the fee structure of the 2008-09 session this year also.
Unhappy over the directive, the self-financed colleges decided to move court.
